How Good Is Your Balance?
Here’s a simple test you can try right now: stand on one leg. How long can you hold it steady?
It might seem like a small challenge, but your balance tells us a lot about how well your body is functioning.
At Jill Drew Physiotherapy Clinic, we see balance as an important indicator of health at every stage of life. For children, balance helps develop coordination and confidence in movement. For adults, it supports fitness, performance, posture, and injury prevention. For older adults, it plays a key role in maintaining independence and reducing the risk of falls.
Balance is much more than staying upright. It relies on your muscles, joints, vision, inner ear, nervous system, and brain all working together. When one of these systems isn’t functioning optimally, balance is often one of the first things to be affected.
Research has shown that balance is closely linked to overall health and wellbeing. In older adults, the ability to stand on one leg has even been associated with longevity and future health outcomes. But regardless of age, poor balance can increase the risk of injury, reduce confidence in movement, and affect everyday activities.
The good news? Balance can be improved.
Like strength and flexibility, balance is a skill that responds to practice. Simple activities such as standing on one leg while brushing your teeth, walking heel-to-toe, practising yoga or Tai Chi, or following a personalised exercise program can make a real difference.
At Jill Drew Physiotherapy Clinic, we assess balance as part of understanding how your body moves and functions. Whether you’re a young athlete, a busy parent, recovering from injury, or wanting to stay active and independent as you age, improving your balance can help you move with greater confidence.
