Important NHS GP Changes !

Important update for patients, concerning significant changes within the NHS GP contract in England.

From 1 April 2026, a pivotal change came into effect: Advice & Guidance (A&G) will become mandatory. This new contractual requirement dictates that GPs must seek digital specialist advice before or INSTEAD making most patient referrals to hospital secondary care services.

This shift is poised to introduce considerable challenges. For patients, navigating the path to see a specialist may become more complex, as direct referrals could be preceded by a mandatory A&G process. The reply from secondary care might advise the GP on management rather than facilitating a consultant appointment, potentially delaying access to specialized consultations. Concurrently, this places additional pressure on general practitioners, who will manage an increased administrative burden while striving to provide timely care.

It’s clear that this evolving landscape is not a fault of either patients or GPs, but rather a systemic change impacting the delivery of healthcare.

It is concerning to note that bowel cancer rates are increasing significantly among individuals under 50 worldwide. Studies in the UK indicate a notable rise, with adults aged 25-49 experiencing a 22% increase between the early 1990s and 2018. While the NHS offers routine screening for those aged 50-74, this growing trend in younger demographics warrants attention.
