Those 5am starts can become super frustrating and we have all been there at some point!

The question to ask yourself is - why does my child consistently wake up before 6am?

We consider anything before 6am as still nighttime. If your little one wakes up before this, treat it the same way as you would if it was the middle of the night.

Here’s a few things to consider that could be keeping them awake during the early hours:

- Daylight coming into their bedroom - as the mornings get lighter earlier this can signify to your little one that it’s time to start the day

- External noises - If there are noises outside or even inside the house this can make it harder for children to fall back asleep

- Not warm enough - the temperature tends to drop around 4am and could mean your little one isn’t comfortable

- Too much daytime sleep - check the amount of daytime sleep is appropriate for your little one’s age
- Too little daytime sleep -this can lead to overtiredness which can actually cause disrupted sleep and early wakes

- Hunger - if your child hasn’t fed well or eaten enough during the day they are likely to wake in the early hours looking to fill their tummies!

💤 T O P T I P Should bedtime be later?

“Keep them up later and they’ll sleep later.”

Well, not always. In fact, in most cases, the opposite happens!

Little ones have a natural body clock that leans towards early mornings often around 6-7am.

When bedtime gets pushed back, they can become overstimulated or overtired, which can often lead to more disturbed nights and even earlier wake-ups.

A slightly earlier bedtime often helps them settle better and sleep more soundly overall.

But do remember - every little one will have the hours of sleep that they need overnight, and once that has been met, they may just be ready to get up and start the day!

Finding what’s right for your child is essential and looking at the wider overall picture will help you work out what they need.

Figuring out when to move from 2 naps to 1 can feel confusing. Most little ones start showing signs from around 11-14 months, but the key is consistency, so look for patterns over 1–2 weeks.

Signs they’re ready to drop a nap:

💤 Resisting naps or bedtime
💤 Staying awake longer in the morning
💤 Bedtime creeping too late (second nap doesn’t fit)
💤 More night wakings or early starts

Top tip: prioritise the first nap.

It’s usually the easiest one of the day, thanks to leftover sleep pressure from the night and less stimulation. If you cut it short, there’s no guarantee the second nap will make up for it and that can leave you with two short naps and a very tired, grumpy baby by bedtime.

5 ⭐ Google Review

"Our daughter Iris had only slept through the night a handful of times at 16 months. We have always put her down awake and had a nap routine in place but had become stuck during the night wake ups. We were using milk to settle her and she was waking out of habit expecting the bottle. We had a call with Pav and explained the issues. Her advice made perfect sense and we implemented it immediately. Iris has now been sleeping through the night for the last two weeks and the whole household is happier. It feels amazing to finally be sleeping and I couldn’t recommend Pav enough. If we need to again, we’ll definitely be seeking advice in future. Thank you so much for all the help and support."

I get asked this question A LOT!

As with every bit of advice I give - there really are no “bad” habits and what really matters is if it is working for you.

Of course, if your baby is always napping in the car or the pram and you can’t get them to fall asleep without taking them out, it can get tricky and may not be sustainable depending on your situation.

If your little one can fall asleep independently, the odd nap on the go isn’t going to change that, so it won’t undo all of your hard work.

Sometimes, we just can’t avoid being out during our little one’s nap time and other times we just need a break to get out of the house.

You can make it a planned nap on the go to help keep sleep on track by timing outings around your little one’s usual nap time whenever possible and recreate their sleep environment by making it dark and using portable white noise, especially if they are usually easily disturbed by external noise.

💤 T O P T I P Reducing the risk of SIDS

The Lullaby Trust is a great resource with lots of information about keeping your little one safe during sleep.

Make sure you’re familiar with the recommended advice!

👶🏼 Lie your baby on their back - Always put your baby on their back for every sleep, as the chance of SIDS is particularly high for babies who are sometimes placed on their front or side.

👶🏼 Keep the sleep space clear - Babies are at higher risk of SIDS if they have their heads covered, so keep the cot clear of any items such as bumpers, toys and loose bedding

👶🏼 Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress

👶🏼 Sleep your baby in the same room as you for the first six months

👶🏼 Avoid your baby overheating - It is important to make sure that your baby’s room is a comfortable temperature – not too hot or too cold. The chance of SIDS is higher in babies who get too hot. Try to keep the room temperature between 16 -20°C.

💤 T O P T I P Choosing a Sleep Consultant

With it recently being highlighted in the news and media that sleep consulting is an unregulated industry, it’s important you know what to look for when choosing a sleep consultant if you’ve reached the point where you need sleep support.

Here’s a few tips on what to look out for to help you make the right choice:

1. Are they truly certified?
Many sleep consultants say they’re “certified” - but by whom? Look for someone with thorough, evidence-based training (including The Lullaby Trust guidance), accredited by a recognised body such as the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants.

2. Are they much cheaper than others?
If so, it’s worth asking why. Are they fully trained and insured? Do they offer limited support? Remember: “pay cheap, pay twice.” Check what’s included, especially follow-up calls and emails, as questions often come up once you begin.

3. Do they welcome your questions?
A knowledgeable consultant will. It’s also helpful if they have a mentor or professional network to turn to if needed.

4. What do the reviews say?
Online testimonials can give a clear picture of other families’ experiences.

5. Does it sound too good to be true?
Be cautious of promises of perfect sleep with zero tears. It’s okay to ask how they’ll achieve this. In reality, some protest is normal as little ones adjust to change.

If you need support, Little Dreams Consulting are members of the British Sleep Society, British Paediatric Sleep Society, and the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants, with APSC-approved training (the only programme of its kind in the UK). Our franchise is also accredited by the British Franchise Association.

We’ve supported thousands of families, have only 5★ Google reviews, and will work with you until your sleep goals are reached - even if that takes longer than expected.
