Encouraging knee pain acupuncture treatment this week

A patient presented with a 2-month history of knee pain, including marked tightness and tenderness along the Vastus Lateralis and Gallbladder channel. This appeared to be contributing to lateral patellar tracking, with a noticeable clicking knee sensation and sharp pain on the outer side of the kneecap around ST35.

Treatment involved scalp acupuncture at the Foot Motor Area, combined with needling along the Stomach/Spleen and Gallbladder channels, with electrical stimulation.

By the following day, the patient reported that the clicking had resolved.😀

A very positive response, and a good example of how acupuncture for knee pain may help support both pain relief and improved knee function.

Four Pillars Acupuncture is supporting patients with knee pain regulation in St Albans and surrounding areas.

Sleep, Stress, and the Shen in Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, poor sleep is not only about tiredness. It may reflect that the Shen — often understood as the mind or spirit — is unable to settle at night.

When the Shen is calm, sleep can be deep and restorative. But when life is full of stress, pressure, overthinking, and emotional strain, the mind may remain active even when the body is exhausted.

TCM also speaks of the Po, connected to the Lungs, breath, instinct, and the body’s ability to feel grounded and recover.

When Shen and Po are out of harmony, people may feel:

tired but wired
unable to switch off
tense, restless, or emotionally drained
exhausted, but not deeply rested
Over time, this can affect not only sleep, but also stress levels, pain, fatigue, and recovery.

This is one reason acupuncture can be so helpful.
Treatment is not only about symptoms — it is about helping the mind settle, the body soften, and the nervous system regain balance.

Sometimes healing begins with something very simple:

letting the Shen come home.

If you are struggling with sleep, stress, fatigue, or persistent tension, acupuncture may help support a deeper sense of rest and recovery.

In acupuncture, treatment is guided by a deep understanding of the body’s channels, collaterals, and internal organ systems. Classical Chinese medicine teaches that effective treatment depends on seeing how these pathways connect and how balance changes with the seasons and the individual.😀

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, knee pain is not viewed only as a problem within the joint itself. It may be understood in relation to circulation, muscles, tendons, posture, and the body’s overall internal balance. This is why two people with the same knee diagnosis may receive different treatment. At Four Pillars Acupuncture in St Albans, acupuncture is tailored to the individual and may help support mobility, reduce tension, and encourage recovery.

Running on empty?

By this point in the year, many people begin to notice the effects of prolonged stress and accumulated fatigue.

You may find yourself experiencing:

• Ongoing neck and shoulder tension
• Poor or fragmented sleep
• Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
• Headaches or mental exhaustion
• Difficulty fully switching off

Often, these patterns build gradually over time.

At Four Pillars Acupuncture, treatment focuses not only on symptom relief, but on supporting the body’s ability to regulate and recover more effectively.

Lung Moisturising Herbal Drink

Some weeks, my clinic conversations sound the same:

“I’m not ill… just constantly dry.”
“Throat feels scratchy, especially at night.”
“The cough never fully goes away.”

Dry hot weather in summer, long hours talking, dusty work environments…
over time, the body simply runs out of fluids.

So I started recommending this gentle herbal drink to my friends.

Not as a “quick fix”
but as something to restore what’s been slowly depleted.

🍐 Pear, apple & sugarcane
🌿 Combined with traditional herbs like Mai D**g and Bai He

It works quietly:
• Moistens the lungs
• Soothes the throat
• Helps the body rebuild fluids naturally

Most people don’t notice it immediately.
But after a few days, they tell me:

“I didn’t realise how dry I felt… until it eased.”

That’s the nature of this kind of support—
subtle, steady, and restorative.

If your body has been feeling “a bit off” rather than clearly unwell,
this might be the kind of support it’s asking for.

If you’re unsure whether this suits your condition, feel free to message or ask during your next visit.

You’re not just “tired”

Many people I see don’t describe themselves as ill.
They say things like:

• “I’m just always exhausted”
• “Sleep doesn’t feel restorative”
• “My energy never really comes back”

Often, tests come back normal.
But the experience is still very real.

In clinic, I look at this differently.

Fatigue is not just about energy levels.
It’s often a sign that the system has been under strain for too long— physically, mentally, or both.

My blog would give you further information of CFS

Treatment isn’t about a quick boost.
It’s about helping the body gradually reset:

• improving sleep quality
• regulating the nervous system
• restoring a more stable energy pattern

This takes time—but it is possible.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and it may be worth looking at it from a different perspective.

If you’re dealing with ongoing fatigue, feel free to get in touch or learn more about how I work.

Scalp Acupuncture in St Albans

Many people are familiar with traditional body acupuncture.

Scalp acupuncture is different.

It is a more specialised approach that focuses on the relationship between the brain, nervous system, and physical function.

At Four Pillars Acupuncture, scalp acupuncture is often used as part of treatment for:

• Chronic pain
• Migraine and headaches
• Post-stroke rehabilitation support
• Numbness or altered sensation
• Ongoing tension and nervous system overload
• Sleep difficulties and fatigue

Scalp acupuncture is not simply about placing needles on the head.

It involves a structured assessment and a clinical understanding of how symptoms may relate to nervous system regulation.

For some people, it may be an appropriate addition to a broader treatment plan.

Treatment is always adapted to the individual presentation.

Feeling more tired after the Easter break than before it?

For many people, returning to routine after a holiday period can feel surprisingly difficult.

Changes in sleep, heavier meals, travelling, disrupted schedules, and the sudden return to work can all place extra load on the body.

You may notice:

• Neck and shoulder tension
• Poor sleep
• Digestive discomfort
• Fatigue that does not improve with rest
• Feeling “wired but tired”
• Difficulty settling back into routine

At Four Pillars Acupuncture, treatment is not only focused on symptoms.

It is about supporting the body’s ability to regulate after periods of increased stress, change, or overload.

Sometimes, what feels like “just tiredness” is a sign that the nervous system has not fully settled.
