Not every exercise needs to be complicated.
As we age, recover or simply want to maintain, it’s often the simple movements that have the biggest impact on maintaining independence and quality of life.
A squat, for example, isn’t just a gym exercise—it’s the movement pattern we use to sit down, stand up, pick something up from the floor, play with our children, garden, or, in my case, put the cat down.
Research consistently shows that maintaining lower-body strength and regularly practising functional movement patterns is associated with better mobility, balance, confidence, and reduced risk of falls as we get older. It also helps us continue doing the everyday tasks that matter most.
Recovery and maintenance don’t always require complicated programmes. Sometimes, the most effective place to start is by moving well, moving often, and strengthening the patterns you use every day.
