🩵 Diabetes Awareness Week – Reason 4 🩵

Why is it so important for people living with diabetes to look after their feet?

👣 Reason 4: Problems aren’t always painful

One of the biggest dangers with diabetic foot problems is that they don’t always hurt.

We sometimes hear:
“It didn’t hurt, so I thought it was fine.”

But reduced sensation can mean infections, ulcers or injuries develop without somebody realising how serious they’ve become.

Pain is normally the body’s warning system… but diabetes can sometimes quieten that warning.

That’s why regular foot checks are so important 💙

🩵 Diabetes Awareness Week – Reason 3 🩵

Why is it so important for people living with diabetes to look after their feet?

👣 Reason 3: Foot ulcers can start from something very small

A tiny cut.
A cracked heel.
A rubbing shoe.
A blister that “didn’t seem serious.”

For many people these heal quickly.

But with diabetes, reduced sensation and slower healing can sometimes allow small injuries to develop into foot ulcers if they’re not noticed early.

That’s why regular foot checks are so important — especially if you struggle to feel changes in your feet 💙

🩵 Diabetes Awareness Week – Reason 2 🩵

Why is it so important for people living with diabetes to look after their feet?

👣 Reason 2: Slower healing

Many people don’t realise that diabetes can affect circulation and healing.

A small blister from a shoe, a cracked heel or even a tiny cut can sometimes take much longer to heal than expected.

We often explain it like this:

Imagine getting a paper cut on your hand… most people barely notice it after a few days.

But on a diabetic foot, healing can sometimes be much slower — especially if the area is under constant pressure from walking.

That’s why checking feet regularly and dealing with problems early is so important 💙

🩵 Diabetes Awareness Week – Reason 1 🩵

Why is it so important for people living with diabetes to look after their feet?

👣 Reason 1: Reduced sensation

Diabetes can sometimes damage the nerves in the feet, meaning cuts, pressure areas or injuries may not always be felt straight away.

Something small can become a much bigger problem if it goes unnoticed.

That’s why regular foot checks and professional footcare are so important 💙

☀️ Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Don’t Forget Your Feet

Most people think of checking moles on their face, arms or back, but skin cancer can also develop on the feet.

A patient once attended North Wales Foot Care with what they believed was simply a birthmark on the sole of their foot. During routine appointments, we monitored the area and noticed that it appeared to be getting larger between visits.

We advised them to have it checked by their GP. Further investigations revealed that it was cancerous and required treatment.

While foot health practitioners do not diagnose skin cancer, we spend a lot of time examining feet and can often spot changes that patients may not notice themselves.

👣 Keep an eye out for:
• New marks or moles
• Changes in size, shape or colour
• Areas that bleed, ulcerate or don’t heal
• Unusual pigmentation under or around toenails

If you notice any changes to a mark on your feet, it’s always worth getting it checked.

Sometimes the smallest changes can be the most important.

Hot feet at night? 🥵

Try putting your foot cream in the fridge for 20 minutes before applying it.
