๐ŸŒฑ How Growing for Wellbeing Week helps people with PMLD in Cornwall ๐ŸŒฑ

๐ŸŒผ National Growing for Wellbeing Week, in early June, highlights how gardening and growing food can boost wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities. Planting seeds, tending to plants and watching them grow helps to promote calm, while bringing purpose and enjoyment.

๐Ÿ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, gardening is a lovely way for the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support to engage with the world around them. Whether itโ€™s feeling soil between their fingers, watering plants, exploring textures or simply watching things grow, these moments offer rich sensory experiences.

๐ŸŒฟ Our carers love involving service users in gentle gardening activities at the day centre and respite bungalow.

๐Ÿ“ And when something theyโ€™ve helped grow is ready to be tasted and enjoyed, it brings an extra layer of excitement and pride.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We are currently looking for weekend staff to join our respite bungalow and outreach team in Cornwall. This role can be especially rewarding for people in higher education who want meaningful, handsโ€‘on experience supporting young people with PMLD.

๐Ÿ“š ICH is celebrating Share a Story Month for PMLD in Cornwall ๐Ÿ“š

๐ŸŒŸ National Share a Story Month, running throughout May, is a nationwide celebration of the power of storytelling and reading aloud. This yearโ€™s theme is โ€œOnce Upon a Storytimeโ€ and spotlights how stories bring people together through books, spoken word and shared imagination.

๐Ÿ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, stories play an important role in how we support young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Whether a story comes from a favourite book, a sensory story bag, or something made up in the moment, storytelling helps to create connection and engagement while also providing comfort.

๐Ÿ“– Earlier this year, our Cornwall team enjoyed a wonderful time on National Book Day exploring different books with our service users. Many of our young people respond to stories through listening, touch, sound, rhythm or simply enjoying the shared experience. Sensory storytelling is especially powerful for people with PMLD, helping them participate in ways that feel meaningful and accessible.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We are currently looking for weekend staff to join our respite bungalow and outreach team in Cornwall. This role can be especially rewarding for students in higher education who want meaningful, handsโ€‘on experience supporting young people with PMLD.

๐Ÿ›ž Accessibility Awareness and supporting older people at home in Cornwall ๐Ÿ›ž

๐ŸŒ Accessibility Awareness Day, on the 21st of May, encourages everyone to think, talk and learn about access and inclusion for people with disabilities. With over one billion people worldwide living with disabilities, accessibility is essential for ensuring everyone can participate fully in daily life and remain connected to their communities.

๐Ÿ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, accessibility is central to how we support older people in their own homes. As mobility, vision or health needs change, good access becomes essential for comfort, safety and independence.

๐Ÿก Our carers work closely with each person to make daily life more accessible, whether thatโ€™s supporting safe movement around the home, reducing fall risks, adapting routines, or helping older people navigate steps, paths and familiar spaces with confidence. Small adjustments can make a big difference to wellbeing and peace of mind.

๐Ÿค— At ICH, weโ€™re committed to helping older people stay safe, comfortable and independent at home, with support that adapts as their needs change.

๐Ÿ›ž Accessibility Awareness and PMLD recruitment in Cornwall ๐Ÿ›ž

๐ŸŒ Accessibility Awareness Day, on the 21st of May, is all about getting people talking, thinking and learning about access and inclusion for people with disabilities. With over one billion people worldwide living with disabilities, accessibility is essential for ensuring everyone can participate fully in daily life and in the wider community.

๐Ÿ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, accessibility is at the heart of how we support young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). For our service users, good access isnโ€™t just helpful, itโ€™s essential for making comfort, safety and independence possible.

๐Ÿก At our respite bungalow and day centre, we ensure that every space is designed with purposeโ€‘made accessibility in mind. This includes wide, uncluttered pathways, adapted bathrooms, safe hoisting systems, sensoryโ€‘friendly rooms, and outdoor areas that are easy to navigate and enjoy. These features help reduce stress, support mobility, and allow each young person to move through their day with confidence.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We are currently looking for weekend staff to join our respite bungalow and outreach team in Cornwall. This role can be especially rewarding for those in higher education who want meaningful, handsโ€‘on experience supporting young people with PMLD.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ Spring is in the air at ICH in Cornwall with outdoor activities and job opportunities ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟ May is National Walking Month, and while not all of the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support are able to walk, every one of them can still enjoy the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.

๐Ÿ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, our carers love taking service users out into the fresh air, whether thatโ€™s visiting local gardens, exploring peaceful parks, or enjoying a gentle time in nature at places of interest across the community.

๐ŸŒผ Simply spending time outside in the garden can bring enjoyment and relaxation. Fresh air, birdsong, sunlight and familiar outdoor spaces offer soothing sensory experiences that help our young people feel relaxed and grounded.

๐Ÿค— National Walking Month is a lovely reminder that movement, nature and fresh air can be enjoyed in many different ways, and our carers are here to support each young person in the way that suits them best.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We are currently looking for weekend staff to join our respite bungalow and outreach team in Cornwall. This role could be especially rewarding for those still in higher education who want meaningful, handsโ€‘on experience supporting young people with PMLD.

๐Ÿ“ข Why PMLD deserves more research and more voices ๐Ÿ“ข

๐Ÿ“ƒ People with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) are some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, yet PMLD remains one of the most underโ€‘researched areas in disability science.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ Researchers themselves acknowledge that knowledge about developmental pathways, communication, sensory processing, and environmental influences for people with PMLD is limited.

โŒ Traditional research methods often donโ€™t fit the unique ways people with PMLD communicate and experience the world, which means they are frequently left out of studies altogether.

๐Ÿค” This lack of research has real consequences. Families, carers, and professionals often have fewer evidenceโ€‘based tools to draw on, and society risks overlooking a group whose needs are complex but whose lives are rich with potential, connection, and meaning.

๐Ÿค— At In Caring Hands (ICH), we see every day how much there is to learn from the young people we support. Their individuality, their ways of communicating, and the relationships they build with our carers show just how important it is for the world to invest more time, attention, and research into understanding PMLD.

๐Ÿ’ช Every person with PMLD deserves to be seen, heard, and supported, not only through compassionate care, but through a scientific community that recognises their value.

โ“ If youโ€™re a compassionate, UKโ€‘based carer who wants to make a real difference in the lives of young people with PMLD, perhaps youโ€™d be interested in joining the ICH family.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ ICH supporting the health of young people with PMLD in Cornwall ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

๐Ÿงก For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support at In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, staying safe, healthy and protected from illness is essential.

๐Ÿค Even small changes in health or environment can have a negative impact, which is why our carers take a careful, personalised approach every day across our day centre and respite centre.

๐Ÿ’‰ This World Immunisation Week, 24th to 30th April 2026, we are supporting families as they ensure their older teenagers and young adults with PMLD are up to date with their vaccinations.

๐Ÿฉบ Medical appointments can feel overwhelming, so our carers help by talking through what will happen, practising the steps, and using gentle roleโ€‘play to make the experience feel more predictable and less stressful.

๐Ÿค— These small preparations can make a big difference, helping our service users feel calmer, more secure and better able to cope with the routine healthcare they need.

๐Ÿค If youโ€™re looking for compassionate, specialist support for a young person with PMLD in Cornwall, our ICH team is here to help through our day centre and respite services.

๐Ÿค— Supporting complex needs with confidence at ICH ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿ’ At In Caring Hands (ICH), our Cornwall based team of carers, supports people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) via our specialist day centre and respite centre. Every person we support has a unique mix of physical, sensory, and communication needs, and our carers adapt confidently to each one.

๐Ÿฅฐ We take a completely personalised approach to ensure the best care for our service users. This includes communication techniques that make understanding as clear as possible, consistent routines that support emotional security, specialist physical care such as safe moving and handling, and close family partnership so families feel heard, supported and involved.

๐Ÿก For families providing care for their loved ones with PMLD, the same principles can make daily life calmer and more meaningful: noticing and responding to small changes, keeping communication predictable, and adding plenty of soothing sensory moments whenever possible.

๐Ÿชด We are expanding our team of carers. If youโ€™re based in the UK and would be interested in joining our Cornwall PMLD team, weโ€™re looking for people who are hardworking, compassionate and eager to make a real difference in the lives of young people with PMLD.
