🌟 Learning Disability Week at ICH in Cornwall 🌟

🚧 Learning Disability Week encourages everyone to recognise the contributions people with a learning disability make to society, while also raising awareness of the barriers they still face.

📆 This year, it takes place from Monday the 15th of June to Sunday the 21st of June 2026, spotlighting what life is like for people with a learning disability and ensuring their voices, experiences and stories are heard by the wider world.

👁️ The theme for 2026 is “Do you see me?” a powerful reminder of the importance of people with a learning disability being seen, heard, included and valued in every part of their life.

💛 We provide care to young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) at our respite bungalow in St Austell and our day service in Threemilestone.

🙌 Not just this week, but every day we celebrate the amazing people we care for, for who they are and the unique ways they communicate, connect and express
themselves.

🌈 Celebrating Disability Pride Month at ICH in Cornwall 🌈

📆 Every July, Disability Pride Month brings disabled people and their communities together in solidarity. It is a time to recognise the creativity, resilience and achievements of disabled people, while also challenging the negative attitudes that still exist in society.

💪 For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) that we support, this month is a reminder that they matter deeply. It’s also a chance for all of us at In Caring Hands (ICH) at our respite bungalow in St Austell and day service at Threemilestone, to start conversations, share stories and celebrate the diverse ways our young people communicate, connect and express themselves.

🤗 Disability Pride Month has grown into a global celebration of disability rights, visibility and inclusion. Today it continues to highlight the barriers disabled people face and the importance of creating communities where everyone is valued and supported in order to thrive. With 3 out of 4 disabled people reporting negative attitudes, this month plays a vital role in changing the conversation and promoting pride, acceptance and equality.

🌱 How Growing for Wellbeing Week helps people with PMLD in Cornwall 🌱

🌼 National Growing for Wellbeing Week, in early June, highlights how gardening and growing food can boost wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities. Planting seeds, tending to plants and watching them grow helps to promote calm, while bringing purpose and enjoyment.

💛 At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, gardening is a lovely way for the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support to engage with the world around them. Whether it’s feeling soil between their fingers, watering plants, exploring textures or simply watching things grow, these moments offer rich sensory experiences.

🌿 Our carers love involving service users in gentle gardening activities at the day centre and respite bungalow.

🍓 And when something they’ve helped grow is ready to be tasted and enjoyed, it brings an extra layer of excitement and pride.

📣 We are currently looking for weekend staff to join our respite bungalow and outreach team in Cornwall. This role can be especially rewarding for people in higher education who want meaningful, hands‑on experience supporting young people with PMLD.

📚 ICH is celebrating Share a Story Month for PMLD in Cornwall 📚

🌟 National Share a Story Month, running throughout May, is a nationwide celebration of the power of storytelling and reading aloud. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Storytime” and spotlights how stories bring people together through books, spoken word and shared imagination.

💛 At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, stories play an important role in how we support young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Whether a story comes from a favourite book, a sensory story bag, or something made up in the moment, storytelling helps to create connection and engagement while also providing comfort.

📖 Earlier this year, our Cornwall team enjoyed a wonderful time on National Book Day exploring different books with our service users. Many of our young people respond to stories through listening, touch, sound, rhythm or simply enjoying the shared experience. Sensory storytelling is especially powerful for people with PMLD, helping them participate in ways that feel meaningful and accessible.

🚶‍♂️ Spring is in the air at ICH in Cornwall with outdoor activities and job opportunities 🚶‍♀️

🌿 May is National Walking Month, and while not all of the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support are able to walk, every one of them can still enjoy the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.

💛 At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, our carers love taking service users out into the fresh air, whether that’s visiting local gardens, exploring peaceful parks, or enjoying a gentle time in nature at places of interest across the community.

🌼 Simply spending time outside in the garden can bring enjoyment and relaxation. Fresh air, birdsong, sunlight and familiar outdoor spaces offer soothing sensory experiences that help our young people feel relaxed and grounded.

🤗 National Walking Month is a lovely reminder that movement, nature and fresh air can be enjoyed in many different ways, and our carers are here to support each young person in the way that suits them best.

📢 Why PMLD deserves more research and more voices 📢

📃 People with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) are some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, yet PMLD remains one of the most under‑researched areas in disability science.

👨‍🔬 Researchers themselves acknowledge that knowledge about developmental pathways, communication, sensory processing, and environmental influences for people with PMLD is limited.

❌ Traditional research methods often don’t fit the unique ways people with PMLD communicate and experience the world, which means they are frequently left out of studies altogether.

🤔 This lack of research has real consequences. Families, carers, and professionals often have fewer evidence‑based tools to draw on, and society risks overlooking a group whose needs are complex but whose lives are rich with potential, connection, and meaning.

🤗 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we see every day how much there is to learn from the young people we support. Their individuality, their ways of communicating, and the relationships they build with our carers show just how important it is for the world to invest more time, attention, and research into understanding PMLD.

🛡️ ICH supporting the health of young people with PMLD in Cornwall 🛡️

🧡 For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support at In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, staying safe, healthy and protected from illness is essential.

🤏 Even small changes in health or environment can have a negative impact, which is why our carers take a careful, personalised approach every day across our day centre and respite centre.

💉 This World Immunisation Week, 24th to 30th April 2026, we are supporting families as they ensure their older teenagers and young adults with PMLD are up to date with their vaccinations.

🩺 Medical appointments can feel overwhelming, so our carers help by talking through what will happen, practising the steps, and using gentle role‑play to make the experience feel more predictable and less stressful.

🤗 These small preparations can make a big difference, helping our service users feel calmer, more secure and better able to cope with the routine healthcare they need.

😟 For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support at In Caring Hands (ICH), stress can be triggered by changes in routine, sensory overload or communication challenges. Even small shifts in the day can feel overwhelming without the right support.

🌿 During Stress Awareness Month (April 2026), our team of carers at ICH in Cornwall is working closely with our service users to create calm, reassuring environments across our day centre and respite centre.

✔️ This includes predictable routines, gentle sensory regulation and communication approaches that reduce anxiety rather than add to it.
