🤗 Working as a carer for people with PMLD at ICH Cornwall 🤗

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we support people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), each with their own unique needs, communication styles and ways of experiencing the world.

💙 Being a carer for someone with PMLD isn’t just a job — it’s a role that asks for patience, gentleness and genuine compassion. The people we support often rely on us to understand their small cues, their preferences, and the tiny details that help them feel safe, understood and comfortable.

🌟 A great PMLD carer is someone who notices the little things: a change in facial expression, a familiar sound that brings comfort, or a small movement that signals excitement or discomfort. This level of understanding builds trust and makes everyday experiences more meaningful.

🏡 At our respite bungalow in St Austell, our day centre in Threemilestone, and within our community support teams, we work closely together to make sure each person receives care that is attentive, respectful and tailored to them. We’re more than a team — we’re a family who support one another as much as we support the people in our care.

🟢 World Cerebral Palsy Day at ICH Cornwall 🟢

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we support people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

💚 Beyond learning disabilities, some of our service users have complex physical needs caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy. This can shape how they move, communicate and experience the world and may result in sensory differences or unique ways of expressing themselves. Our aim is always comfort, dignity and meaningful connection.

📆 The 6th of October is World Cerebral Palsy Day, a time to recognise the strength and individuality of people living with cerebral palsy and other limiting conditions.

🫂 At our respite bungalow in St Austell, day centre in Threemilestone, and with our community support teams, we learn each person’s unique methods of communication and what makes them feel safe and comfortable.

🌼 Familiar sounds, music and sensory activities offer reassurance and provide outlets for self-expression and having fun. All of these tiny details matter. They build trust, reduce frustration and help each person feel understood.

🫶 International Day of Sign Languages at ICH Cornwall 🫶

♥️ For many people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), spoken language isn’t always the easiest way to express themselves.

🤏 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we often use simple forms of sign language not because someone is deaf, but because signs and gestures can be a clearer, calmer way for some of the people we support to communicate their needs, choices and feelings.

📅 The 23rd of September, is International Day of Sign Languages and is a way to acknowledge that language is accessible for everyone when provided with the right tools.

🖐️ We see every day how even a small gesture can be an important signal meaning “more”, “finished”, “yes”, “no”, or “thank you”. This simple communication can reduce frustration, build trust, and help someone feel understood.

🏡 Across our respite care bungalow in St Austell, our day centre in Threemilestone, and our community care teams, we support people with PMLD to communicate in the way that works best for them.

🧏‍♂️ For some, that’s words. For others, it’s eye contact, facial expression, or hand signs. What matters most is that their voice, in whatever form it takes, is heard.

🤗 Urology Awareness Month at ICH Cornwall 🤗

♥️ For many people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), understanding and communicating discomfort or changes in their bladder or urinary health can be difficult. That’s why at In Caring Hands (ICH) our carers’ awareness, patience and attentiveness matter so much.

🗓️ Urology conditions are incredibly common; in fact, one in two people will experience one in their lifetime, which is why Urology Awareness Month is so important as a reminder.

🏡 At ICH in Cornwall, we provide care for people with PMLD at our respite care bungalow in St Austell, our day centre in Threemilestone, and via our community care teams.

💛 Our carers are trained to notice even small signs of a problem: changes in routine, discomfort, restlessness, or subtle shifts in behaviour. These observations help us protect the dignity, comfort and health of the people we care for.

☺️ A part of our PMLD service, supporting urology health isn’t just about clinical awareness, it’s about connection, about knowing each person’s unique ways of communicating. We provide a calm, trusting environment where service users feel safe, understood and cared for.

🤗 National Inclusion Week at ICH Cornwall 🤗

♥️ This week at In Caring Hands (ICH) is all about inclusion, it’s about creating a workplace where kindness is the norm, where every voice matters, and where everyone belongs.

🗓️ It’s National Inclusion Week (14th to 20th of September) and across our respite care bungalow in St Austell, our day centre in Threemilestone, and our community care teams, we see the same truth again and again: When carers feel valued, included and happy, the people we support feel it too.

☺️ As part of our profound and multiple learning disability (PMLD) service, inclusion isn’t a policy or a poster on the wall. It’s the way we greet each other in the morning. It’s the way we listen, support, laugh, and lift one another up. 🥰 This is done at our respite centre in St Austell and our day centre in Threemilestone near Truro. Community care is provided in people’s own homes in mid Cornwall, from Wadebridge to Truro. 🐾 National Dog Day at In Caring Hands Cornwall 🐾

🏡 For many teenagers and young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), pets play an important role in their emotional world.

😺 Even though we don’t have animals at our respite bungalow or day centre, we understand how meaningful it is for a young person to stay connected to the pets they love at home.

🐶 A pet such as a dog can offer comfort, routine, sensory stimulation and emotional reassurance. The familiar sound of paws, the joy of a furry face greeting them in the morning, a wagging tail or the warmth of a loyal companion can help a young person feel secure, calm and understood.

💛 Pets can also support wellbeing in several meaningful ways. Reduced stress, improved mood, sensory engagement and gentle daily interaction all contribute to emotional regulation and a sense of stability, which can be especially important for young people with PMLD.

🤝 At In Caring Hands in Cornwall, we recognise how important these bonds are. When a young person comes to our respite bungalow or day centre, we work closely with families to maintain familiar routines and ensure that the comfort and connection their pet provides at home continues to be respected and supported.

🧁 Baking fun at In Caring Hands Cornwall 🧁

🥰 For young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), baking is a fully sensory experience.

🍰 The sweet aroma of vanilla, chocolate or caramel, the sight of colourful icing and sprinkles, the sound of stirring spoons, whisks and mixers and of course the excitement of tasting something delicious and sweet all combine to create a wonderful experience.

🍪 Baking supports sensory stimulation, anticipation, communication and connection. It’s a chance to explore textures, enjoy companionship and be part of something fun and familiar and National Cupcake Day, on the 17th of August, is the perfect time to have fun in the kitchen.

🫶The respite bungalow and day centre have mixers on remote control switches, so the young people can actually turn them on themselves. And they can be supported to throw sprinkles and get involved.

🥰 Even when a young person can’t take part in all of the cake-making process, they can still enjoy the experience in their own meaningful way. A familiar scent, a bright colour or a shared smile during the activity can be just as engaging and comforting.

🤝 At the In Caring Hands respite bungalow in St Austell and our day centre in Threemilestone, activities such as baking can become a major highlight of the day. Cupcakes may be simple, but the happiness they bring is anything but!

🫴 International Youth Day at ICH Cornwall 🫴

🌍 The 12th of August each year celebrates International Youth Day, a day that recognises the hopes, strengths and aspirations of young people everywhere.

💛 For young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), these hopes, strengths, and aspirations often look different but remain just as real and just as valid. The desire to be included, understood, supported and valued is universal.

🙌 The theme for this year’s IYD is about young people sharing common aspirations across different contexts.

🤝 At In Caring Hands (ICH), both our respite centre in St Austell and our day centre in Threemilestone, support teenagers and young adults with PMLD to experience dignity, connection and meaningful participation in daily life. This is achieved through sensory activities, companionship, inclusion or simply a shared smile or familiar voice.

🌱 This year’s theme reminds us that even when young people face additional barriers, their resilience and potential shine through. Young people with PMLD show creativity, personality and joy in ways that deserve to be seen and celebrated.
