🦶 Time to Swap the Sandals for Winter Shoes! 🥾
As the temperature drops, many of us are digging out our winter boots and closed shoes. But before you do, it's worth taking a moment to think about your feet — because the shoes we wear in colder months can have a big impact on our foot health.
Why winter footwear matters
Going from open sandals to closed shoes and boots means your feet are:
More enclosed, which can trap moisture and increase the risk of fungal infections
More prone to rubbing, blisters and corns from stiffer materials
Under pressure from tighter fit, especially if you wear thicker socks
Top tips for a healthy transition
Check the fit — Feet can change shape over time. Before wearing last year's boots, make sure they still fit properly. You should have about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
Break them in gradually — Don't wear new boots for a full day straight away. Build up wear time to avoid blisters and pressure points.
Look after your socks — Choose moisture-wicking materials (wool or bamboo blends) over pure cotton, which holds dampness against the skin.
Keep feet dry — Rotate your footwear so each pair has time to dry out fully between wears. If your feet get wet, change socks as soon as you can.
Don't sacrifice support for style — Look for shoes with a good sole, secure fastening and enough room in the toe box. Fashion boots with a narrow toe can worsen bunions and hammer toes.
Check your feet regularly — Colder months mean feet are hidden away. Look for changes in colour, nails, or skin, and don't ignore any pain.
When to seek professional advice
If you notice persistent pain, changes to your nails, cracked heels, or anything that doesn't feel right, a foot health appointment can catch problems early — before they become painful or harder to treat.
