External auditory canal exostoses (EAE), commonly known as Surfer's ear is the name for an exostosis or abnormal bone growth within the ear canal. They are otherwise benign growths of the tympanic bone and are strongly associated with frequent cold-water and wind exposure.

Cases are often asymptomatic but noticeable. Irritation from cold water and wind exposure cause the bone surrounding the ear canal to develop lumps of new bony growth which constrict the ear canal. When the ear canal is actually blocked by this condition, water and wax can become trapped and give rise to reoccurring infection (otitis externa). The blockage causes individuals to experience a sense of fullness, conductive hearing loss, and pain in the ear.

The condition is named due to its high prevalence among cold water surfers, although it can occur in any water temperature due to the presence of water in the ear canal. Despite the name, anyone who regularly spends time in cold or windy water is at risk such as kayakers, swimmers, and water athletes.

Creating awareness for this years World Hearing Day 3rd March 2026.
This year the World Health Organisation is concentrating on children and hearing care for every child.
Kernow ear Health is one of very few ear wax removal clinics that do practice micro suction on children's ears as well as adult ears.

Well done to the whole team of nurses and clinicians at Kernow Ear Health who recently gained certifications in ear wax micro suction through The Hearing Lab.
All passed with flying colours as expected for such a competent team of knowledgeable micro suctionists.

Happy New Year to all !
We would like to share the news that we have a new member of staff who is joining us at our clinics who will be at the Threemilestone and St Columb clinics on a regular basis.

We would like to welcome Mitch to our team of micro-suctionists.

Mitch has many years of experience with various emergency services and is looking forward to providing caring, safe and professional treatment working part time with Kernow Ear Health whilst still combining his continuing work for the ambulance service within the NHS.
