Empowered Conversations

Empowered Conversations Empowered Conversations helps Greater Manchester families affected by dementia to stay well, to stay connected and to stay together for longer.

Caring for people living with dementia is not easy, and can create frustrations for all involved. We want to Empower families to live as well as they can with dementia. Improving connections, increasing understanding, encouraging curiosity and focusing on self care can make a huge difference. The team provides communication courses and one to one dementia focused therapeutic support for family car

ers in Greater Manchester. Dr Phil McEvoy developed our first course, ‘Empowered Conversations’, in 2014 to improve communication and relationships between people living with dementia and their families. The course helps people to listen, learn and stay connected. It encourages people to get curious and try different ways to communicate. We have a follow on course, Moving Beyond Words, for when words become trickier to understand and use. We work with the wonderful Dr Maggie Ellis to offer a third course, Adaptive Interactions, around connecting with family members who have advanced dementia. We raise grant funding so that courses are free for families living in Greater Manchester. We run courses for professionals as well, starting with a 2 hour introduction to dementia and communication workshop. We expect groups to pay for these courses. The one to one support offers regular and flexible sessions for carers on the phone or via zoom. Sessions offer time to unload, reflect, consider different approaches, accept and think about self care. This approach is based on the New York University Caregiver Intervention, research showed this delayed the move into full time care by 557 days. We have a carers voice monthly group who are passionate about sharing their stories to bring about positive change for others. We also run a monthly bereavement group for v carers we have worked with

If you know, you really do know. Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is an unfair battle, it's a battle that normally comes when families are on their knees, it's a battle that few win, a battle between health and social care with families stuck in the middle. We need to do better!

Please sign the petition.

Today, we’re joining 11 other health charities from across England to launch a petition urging the UK government to improve the NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) funding
process.

Time is precious for people with Lewy body dementia. Families shouldn’t face battle
after battle to get the support they need.

We’re calling on the Health Secretary to review and fix NHS CHC once and for all.

Join us. Sign our petition now: https://action.dementiauk.org/fix-nhs-continuing-healthcare?utm_campaign=ftf26&utm_source=wom&utm_medium=email&utm_term=LewyBodySociety

How does Empowered Conversations help people?

"I have slowed down when spending time with my mam. I try not to ask so many questions. I try to spend quality time with her rather than rushing to do chores and other jobs. I think about how she feels rather than how I think she should feel. I have taken a lot from the course that I am using daily".

"Learning to enhance and enrich my conversation with my husband to our MUTUAL benefit".

We have 24 people referrals so far, we need 128 for Greater Manchester - so please keep sharing the poster!

Really simple list of symptoms that might help somebody get the right diagnosis and support.

Would your friends and family recognise these symptoms of Lewy body dementia? Would their friends?
