Good Good Golf... more like Bad Bad ๐Ÿ˜”

By now you've probably seen the advert.

A male golfer shoving a woman to the ground as she reached for his golf bag.

Standing over her. Warning her.

15 seconds. Deleted. But the internet doesn't forget.

I get banter. I love banter. I play most of my golf with men.

But banter is laughing about an air shot on the first tee.

Not this.

This is a brand with millions of young, male followers producing an advert that normalises physical aggression towards a woman and calls it marketing.

The comments made it worse.
"Starting a video with a man assaulting a woman always grabs my attention."

Not outliers. A window.

And Callaway a brand I love, the self-proclaimed industry leader in women's golf equipment, an official LPGA partner, let this happen.

I was at the AIG Women's Open weeks ago watching girls pick up a club for the first time.

And then this.

Violence against women and girls is not a punchline.

We cannot keep telling girls golf is for them while the industry puts them on the ground.

Apologies issued 24 hours later aren't enough.

The question is how it got through every single person in the room without one of them saying stop.

Do better.

If you're a Registered Manager in social care, this week probably looked something like this...

At least one member of your team called in sick.

Someone handed in their notice.

Your agency spend crept up again.

And somewhere between the rota gaps and the paperwork, despite loving your job, you wondered how long you can keep doing this.

You are not failing.

You are managing a workforce that is running on empty.

And nobody is measuring why.

79% of social care organisations cite burnout as a major challenge.

73% of frontline care workers have elevated levels of emotional exhaustion.

23.6% of care workers leave their jobs every year.

These are not HR statistics...

They are your Monday morning, your Thursday afternoon, your Saturday night and all the other times in between.

The problem is not that you don't care about your workforce.

The problem is that you don't have the data to know where the pressure is building before it becomes a resignation, a safeguarding concern or a CQC inspection outcome.

That is exactly what In-House Health Limited exists to change.

We measure the health status of your workforce before it becomes a crisis.

We identify the root causes of work related ill health in your organisation.

We give you a structured, evidence based picture of where the risk sits...

So that you can retain the people you have worked hard to recruit and develop.

So that you can demonstrate to CQC that you are proactively managing workforce health, not just reacting to it.

So that your employees are healthy, present and able to deliver the outstanding care your residents and service users deserve.

If this sounds like the conversation your organisation needs to have, I would love to talk.

Three sensors. One night. Still searching.

Last night I changed my CGM sensor. Then changed it again. Then changed it again. My pump spent the entire night buzzing, searching for a signal it couldn't find. I gave up this morning and made the decision to change it again... it was still searching when I was due to play golf... and when I was playing golf!

All 18 holes I was flying completely blind.

No data, no alerts, no idea what my blood sugars were doing. And holes 10, 11 and 12? An absolute disaster, 7,7,8 in a medal comp!

Three holes that unravelled what had genuinely been a good round up till then, and I had no clue why until later.

A banana at the 11th and 12th (yes, it took me that long to eat it), a sensor that finally connected in the car on the way home (obviously), and the answer became very clear.

My blood sugars had tanked.

The last 6 holes once my levels came back up? Par. Bogey. Birdie. Par, Par, Par. Where can I join the tour๐Ÿ˜‚

Turns out a functioning pancreas is fairly useful for a golf swing. Who knewโ›ณ

This is the bit people don't see when they look at a CGM graph or an HbA1c result.

The decisions made without data.

The mornings where the technology doesn't cooperate and you have to use your best judgement and carry on anyway.

Living with Type 1 Diabetes is RELENTLESS, and some days the condition wins the first round before you've even had breakfast.

Happy Type 1 Tuesday ๐Ÿฉบ

Has anyone else ever genuinely blamed a bad hole on their pancreas? I'm doing that today!

79% of social care organisations cite burnout as a major challenge facing their workforce.

Let that number sink in...

Not a minority number.

Not an isolated problem.

Not something happening in a few struggling services.

Nearly FOUR in five organisations!

And yet the response across most of the sector remains the same...

A mindfulness app ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

An EAP helpline ๐Ÿ™„

A fruit bowl in the staff room๐Ÿ˜

Reactive. Tokenistic. Too late.

Because by the time someone reaches out to an EAP, the damage is already done.

By the time burnout shows up in your sickness absence figures, you have already lost months of productivity, continuity of care and probably the employee themselves shortly after.

73% of frontline care workers have elevated levels of emotional exhaustion ๐Ÿฅบ

These are people who absorb other people's pain, grief, fear and vulnerability every single day.

Compassion fatigue is not a buzzword.

It is a professional reality.

And it is associated directly with higher sickness absence, higher turnover and people walking away from a profession that desperately needs them to stay.

The social care sector cannot afford to keep losing people this way...

Not with 23.6% annual turnover.

Not with 410,000 additional posts needed by 2040.

Not with a domestic workforce that has shrunk by 130,000 since the pandemic.

The answer is not another helpline.

The answer is measuring what is actually happening to your workforce before it becomes a crisis...

So that you can act on it while it is still inexpensive and not so problematic, rather than after it has cost you a resignation, a CQC rating and your profitability.

In-House Health Limited exists to alert you to these problems to prevent crisis points in your organisation.

If you lead a social care organisation and this resonates, I would love to have a conversation with you.

This image represents more than the good news I finally got to share last week...

It represents a weight I have carried for a long time.

There have been moments in my career where I have been made to feel like this.

Silenced.

Questioned.

Made to doubt myself for doing the only thing a nurse with a conscience could do.

Raising concerns.

Whistleblowing.

Call it what it is...

The NMC Code is clear.

Nurses have a professional duty to speak up when they see something wrong.

When patients are at risk.

When colleagues are suffering.

When the culture of an organisation is causing harm.

I did that...

More than once ๐Ÿฅบ

And more than once I paid a personal and professional price for it.

The self doubt that follows is something nobody prepares you for.

You question everything...

Was I right?

Was it worth it?

Why did I put myself through this?

And then, quietly, the answer comes...

Because it was the right thing to do.

Because justice matters.

Because nobody should be treated the way I was treated for raising legitimate concerns in good faith.

What nobody tells you about doing the right thing is what comes after.

The people you trusted who threw you under a bus.

The ones who branded you a disrupter, and not in a positive way.

The colleagues who stayed silent to protect themselves.

And the slow, uncomfortable realisation that doing things in good faith does not protect you from being stabbed in the back ๐Ÿ˜”

That kind of experience changes how you see people.

It makes trust harder.

It makes you question motives.

It makes you wonder what the hidden agenda is before someone has even opened their mouth.

That is not cynicism, that is self preservation.

And eventually, it becomes something else entirely...

The same inability to look the other way when something is wrong.

The same discomfort with cultures that silence people instead of listening to them.

The same absolute conviction that workplaces have a duty to look after the people inside them.

That is why I built In-House Health.

Not in spite of what happened.

Because of it.

Last week the tape finally came off.

The sticking plasters are next.

It's Type 1 Tuesday so let's talk about the Food Police this week!

You know who they are...

The colleague who watches you eat a biscuit and says "should you be having that?"

The relative at Christmas dinner who slides the roast potatoes away from you "just to be safe."

The stranger at a cafรฉ who clocks your insulin pump or sensor and asks if you're "allowed" a slice of cake.

Allowed!

The cheek of it ๐Ÿ˜‚

As if living with Type 1 diabetes for years hasn't taught you more about the glycaemic index, carbohydrate counting, insulin to carb ratios and glucose management than most people will ever need to know.

As if every single thing that goes into your mouth hasn't already been calculated, considered and accounted for (when you remember ๐Ÿ˜ฌ).

As if the person managing 180 to 300 extra decisions every day about their own body needs a stranger to weigh in on their lunch.

But before we go any further...

Type 1 diabetes is not the same as your granny's diabetes ๐Ÿ˜…

Type 1 is an autoimmune condition.

My immune system attacked and destroyed the cells in my pancreas that produce insulin.

It had nothing to do with what I ate.

Nothing to do with my lifestyle.

I was not diagnosed because I had too much sugar.

I was diagnosed because my own body turned on itself.

Type 2 diabetes is a different condition entirely, with different causes, different management and different treatment.

Conflating the two does a disservice to everyone living with either.

People with Type 1 diabetes are some of the most informed, self-aware, data-literate people you will ever meet.

They have to be.

So the next time you feel the urge to comment on what a diabetic is eating...

Don't.

Just don't!

Happy Type 1 Tuesday ๐Ÿฉบ

๐Ÿ‘‹ Wave if you have ever had to smile politely at someone who told you that cinnamon cures diabetes.

Last week I took a day out of the office to support Jasmine (The Jazzy Golfer) and the UK Women's Golf Community at the AIG Women's Open at Royal Lytham...

And it was worth every minute away from my laptop!

I spent the day at the SOOO (Style of Our Own) Mastercard tent โ›บ

Talking to women and girls about golf...

Where their nearest community meet up is.

How to join the UK Women's Golf Community for free.

And watching people who had never considered picking up a club walk away curious about the game.

That is what happens when brands invest in women's sport properly.

Not a logo on a banner.

An actual ecosystem that brings elite sport, grassroots community and women-led businesses together in the same space.

But the best part of the day?

I got to spend it with my 19 year old daughter Niamh ๐Ÿฅบ

Days like that do not happen often enough when you are building a business.

And there is something quietly powerful about being at a major women's sporting event, watching elite female athletes compete at the highest level, with your daughter by your side.

It reminded me why women's health, women's sport and women's community are not separate conversations...

They are the same conversation.

Active women live longer, healthier lives.

Connected women are more resilient.

Supported women perform better... on the course, in the workplace, and everywhere in between.

That is the thread that runs through everything I do at In-House Health Limited.

What a day. What a championship โ›ณ

I have known since May...

Do you have any idea how hard it is to sit in meetings, on calls, at events, talking about the future of In-House Health Limited while not being able to say there's a big thing happening that changes it?

Torture

Absolute torture!

So here it is...

In-House Health Limited has been named an Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award Winner for 2026 ๐Ÿฅณ

One of 61 women across the UK receiving a ยฃ75,000 grant, twelve months of business support, and access to a network I have wanted to be part of for years.

You already know what I am building. Goodness knows, you've heard me talk about that and bootstrapping enough.

But what changes now is the pace!

And the pace matters, because social care cannot wait...

23.6% turnover

410,000 more posts needed by 2040 just to stand still

13,000+ people stuck in hospital beds every single day because there is nowhere safe to discharge them to.

Behind every one of those numbers is a workforce being asked to absorb more than any workforce can absorb, and NOBODY is measuring what it is doing to their health until it is already too late.

That is what this funding is really for. To help them, the providers, and the people deserving of quality care.

To everyone who has listened to me talk about workforce health since long before anyone was funding it, thank you. Your support hasn't gone unnoticed and is appreciated.

Buckle up... there's a lot coming!

Last week I shared my best HbA1c result in as long as I can remember.

The data looked brilliant...

And yet the last two weeks have been some of the most exhausting I can remember ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

So what's going on?

Is it the multiple projects I am managing in In-House Health Limited right now?

Is it attending two medical emergencies in the street within 48 hours of each other and the adrenaline crash that followed?

Or is my body quietly telling me that something else needs attention... something beyond the glucose numbers?

You see, Type 1 Diabetes always focuses on your glucose levels but that is only one piece of the picture!

You can have a beautiful HbA1c, perfect time in range, CGM graphs your consultant would frame on the wall...

And still feel like you are dragging yourself through life.

Still exhausted

Still inflamed

Still running on empty

Living with a chronic condition as a woman means navigating symptoms that are rarely taken seriously, frequently dismissed, and almost never looked at as a whole person.

Multiply that by the demands of running a business, managing a lifelong condition 24 hours a day, and processing the kind of week I have just had...

And you start to understand why women need specific, proactive health support.

Not reactive

Not annual

Not one size fits all

But this is not just about me, this is much bigger than me!

Multiply me by an entire workforce that is over 80% female, with an average age of 45...

The social care workforce.

Women managing complex care in a complex system with no health and wellbeing support to back that up. Nothing preventative or supportive to keep them healthy and in work.

That is who In-House Health exists to support.

So when I struggle, I share it.

Not for sympathy

But for every woman in this workforce who has never had the language to describe what she is feeling.

If this resonates, look around you.

The person next to you might be showing up every day with brilliant numbers on paper but have nothing left in the tank.

Happy Type 1 Tuesday ๐Ÿฉบ

๐Ÿ‘‹ Does this resonate? I would love to know if you have ever felt this way. Brilliant numbers on paper, exhausted in real life.

27/07/2026

The new Prime Minister gave his first major interview this week... and for the first time in a very long time, social care was at the top of the agenda!

Andy Burnham has been unequivocal.

"Whatever political capital I have, I will put into fixing broken social care."

"If we don't do it, the NHS will collapse under the weight of trying to care for people."

He wants a National Care Service.

Free at the point of need.

Operating on NHS principles.

Andy Burnham has been trying to fix social care since 2009.. the Conservatives blocked him then and called his funding plans a "death tax."

Fifteen years later, he is back and this time with the keys to Number 10!

Whether this time is different remains to be seen. But the ambition and the urgency are real.

The argument he is making, that the NHS will collapse without social care reform, is one that the data has supported for years.

But here is what I need the new PM to also understand...

You can not reform social care without reforming how it looks after its workforce.

A National Care Service built on a burned-out, undervalued, unwell workforce is not a reformed system.

It is the same system with a different name.

23.6% of care workers leave their jobs every year!

The vacancy rate in social care is still three times higher than the wider economy.

The domestic workforce has shrunk by 130,000 workers since the pandemic.

Reform the funding.

Reform the access.

Reform the system.

But please reform how we look after the workforce...

Measure the health of the people delivering the care, so that we can attract and retain compassionate people, improve capacity, and deliver outstanding care quality for the people in our country.

That is what In-House Health Limited exists to do... and it has never felt more urgent than it does today.

๐Ÿ“ธ I have refrained from commenting on Andy's appointment and sharing anything until now. But here's a throwback to when I won TalkTalk NW Women in Tech Award for Tech for Good a few years ago.
