Wild Swimming, or is it?

I’ve been undertaking some research for my masters. This was not a question I set out to ask, but this is the response I got a few times.

People seemed perturbed by my labelling swimming in nature as wild swimming. People have been doing it for years I’ve been told, why do we have to rebrand it?

Why does it even matter? Do you think it does?

For me, swimming outside is about the nature connection, the blue therapy, the stillness, peace, community, variety, exploration. That feeling of swimming in 5 degrees or today in Bassenthwaite at 22 degrees, I do it because it feels good, not because it’s called a certain name.

Did I get the information I needed for my research? No. But I have come up with my own definition. If I can wee in the water, I’d call it wild swimming 🤣

I’d love to know your thoughts

Follow or Unfollow, the choice is yours but I thought I’d share some of the reasons why I might not appear to be on message lately

I’ll always teach and share yoga, but it’s not all I’m working on.

I say less about massage, I should say more, I really do love to share both womb & fertility massage and Thai Yoga massage. A massage is included in all my bespoke retreats.

I talk more about midlife style now, more than menopause. It feels menopause is a bit of an echo chamber, I don’t talk about HRT so no one takes much notice and I realise, I’ve not shared that much lately.

I managed every menopause symptom I had with a natural solution, even urge incontinence, this is the information I want to share as it helps. There’s a chapter in my book on what I found worked.

I’ll share my swim adventures which are part of the challenge that underpins my book. The main thing I want to use this platform to share is that in life we need adventure & joy.

What do you think? When’s the last time you did a proper belly laugh. When’s the last time you tried something new? When’s the last time you hung out with your girlfriends?

The weekend is coming and I’d love you to do something just for you, something that makes you feel good and if you do, please share it with me

🔥Welcoming the Feminine, a sauna journey 🔥

When you join me on retreat at my home in Northern Ireland the sauna is there for you to enjoy. Either take a Nordic Hour alone or, if you’d like to be guided, I’ll take you on a journey.

Welcoming the feminine. A solo or small group ritual. Heat, steam, whisking, intention. Then sit round the fire, sup cacao and watch the sun set.

I’ll also be offering some pop up sessions during July & August so you don’t just have to join me on retreat.

All the benefits of sauna combined with a journey to connect to the feminine 🔥

🌊World Ocean Day 🌊

To be honest I celebrate the sea every day but today I’m sharing a few photos from a wonderful weekend at the beach with and and sharing with you why I love the ocean & how I connect with it

🌊 I love the way ocean & moon work together harmoniously to give us life

🌊 we are approximately 70% water & the earths surface is approximately 70% water too. We are fluid beings and connecting with the sea helps me embrace that fluidity (see the wave dance tiles)

🌊 I love being in the sea swimming, on the sea paddle boarding & by the sea crabbing with my grandsons 🦀 free outdoor fun!

🌊 this weekend the sea connected a group of women, most of us strangers but the ocean brought us together in riotous laughter

On David Attenborough’s 100th birthday I pledged to clean every beach I visit for 100 days. This is something we can all do. 90% of what I’ve gathered from the beach had been plastic. So, we can all do our bit by not using single use plastic by carrying a refillable water bottle or keeper cup and taking your own bags shopping also helps reduce the production of plastic. It really is that easy to make a difference.

I’m starting each day in June listening to and singing along with songs of the sea as I travel round the Scottish highlands & islands. I’m grateful for slow mornings at the beach and moments to just be.

What do you love about the ocean?

I’ve joined Substack!

I’m writing a book ‘Swimming into 60’ which follows a challenge I’ve set myself to swim 60 wild kilometres from 59 ~ 60 and I needed somewhere to start showing up as an author.

I wanted somewhere to share my writing, somewhere separate from what I share here. I needed to start sharing my work, out in the wild.

There’s connectivity of course, some of my writing touches on menopause, but these little squares didn’t feel like the right place. I’ll still be here three times a week but will focus on yoga, natural solutions and what I share on retreat.

So, if you’re curious as to what I might be writing about, and you’re on Substack, I’d love you to pop by, take a look and subscribe so you can follow along.

I think you’ll agree that menopause is now a hot topic. There’s more information (misinformation too so check your sources) but one way or another, we’re all talking about it.

What I don’t hear discussed so often is post menopause. Well friends, I arrived here almost 5 years ago and I can tell you it’s a great place to be.

I speak to lots of women navigating menopause and of course whilst you’re going thru a turbulent time it’s hard to look forward. Yes you might still have symptoms, you’ll need to focus on nutrition, strength training, daily steps and prioritise sleep. But, it does not only get better, it transcends. If you let it.

When we get bogged down in the thoughts of fear, scarcity, dissatisfaction, well that becomes our reality. Ageing is good. The alternative is a lot worse!

So for me this is a time of taking risks, living an abundant life and creating joy where I can.

The post menopause Orca is celebrated, revered, she leads the pod, her knowledge is what keeps the pod alive. Wouldn’t it be a better world if human post menopause women had the same respect?

Only humans and 5 species of toothed whale have evolved to live beyond menopause. There’s got to be a reason. The question is, what will you do with your precious post menopause years?

Last November, whilst researching my book swimming into 60, I went swimming with Orca. It was an adventure of a lifetime.

I’d love to know what’s on your post menopause bucket list?

May was an absolute whirlwind, I was away more than I was home which was both unsettling and wonderful in equal measure

✨ May Day, Full Moon & Beltane sound spa, a deep release, so relaxed I fell asleep for the first time ever!
✨Helping my daughter prep her legs for the Belfast Marathon
✨ Heading to the beach to ease those legs after running 26.2 miles and a 3rd generation tradition, burying the kids in the sand
✨a successful wetsuit swim, 600m completed and my new suit tested
✨ a few days in Portugal with Mike before my retreat began
✨ our inaugural Reframe Retreat in the Algarve, so grateful to call this my job, especially as I gave up my career to teach yoga
✨ and so grateful to the women who trust us and join our sell out retreats
✨ being present to watch the sun rise
✨ spending time with my girl and great friends enjoying the sunshine
✨ seeing Madness who I’ve loved since my teens. They didn’t disappoint and I danced all night
✨ stretching my mind, being on boot camp with awesome people who inspire me
✨ being at home (although I’m heading off again)
✨ meeting wonderful women who’ve agreed to be in my book for swims, chats and community
✨ another full moon in the water with a true selkie. Almost completing my target of 5000 meters for the month at 4900 🤦🏼‍♀️

And now it’s time to do it all over again! How was your May? I’d love to hear your highlights

✨ B E G I N N E R S M I N D ✨

How often have you told yourself that you need to be an expert at something to take part?

Maybe it’s messages from childhood that we were not good enough, could not do this or were not capable of that?

Maybe it’s our own limiting beliefs or expectations that stop us trying?

Maybe we tell ourselves a story of being too old to try something new?

I’m your original Jacky of all trades, mistress of none. Because I love to try new things. That’s all. I like variety.

I’m never going to run as far as my friends, or lift as heavy weight, or take on a fast downhill single track on my bike, or swim the fastest.

But I’ll tell you what I will do. Have a damn good time doing them in my own time, in my own way.

If we wait until we’re ready, until we’ve excelled, until we’ve had outside validation, well we might always do just that. Wait.

Tell me, what is it you’d love to try? What’s holding you back? Ageing is a privilege and the best way to make sure you carry on ageing is to stay mobile.

Apply a beginners mind. Be curious. Take some lessons. Join a club. Practice. Live your life and seek joy in all you do. All of it, no matter how ‘good or bad’ you think you’re doing it.

Save this post for when you need a little pep talk or share it with the friend you want to try something new with.

A glimpse at my working week

A week in the Algarve & the last full day on retreat. I truly love my job

It’s not just the life you live but what you do with it and who you spend it with that counts.

If you’re always waiting for the weekend, what might need to change?

It’s a new moon tonight, a time for letting go and setting new intentions for the month ahead.

What’s one thing you could change?

What’s one thing you could set as an intention for the month ahead?

If you’d like to join us on retreat, share this post with a friend you’d like to retreat with. We have one twin and two spots in a solo traveller room left on our September retreat. Will you join us?

Why I quit my career at 55 to teach yoga ~ I’m not the same woman I was a 30.

I don’t have the same responsibilities.

I don’t have the same goals.

I don’t have as many f***s to give.

What I do have though…..

I do have a passion for supporting midlife women navigate menopause and beyond

I love hosting retreats, taking women on a journey, helping them future proof their life

A can do attitude. Some people might think hosting retreats at 59 can’t be done. It can. I can.

Ready to be inspired & empowered then follow along and let’s see what happens next. Or better still join me on retreat (check out the link in my bio). For now 59 year old me is hosting my first retreat in Portugal 🇵🇹
