Adaptive skiing sessions for disabled people are now available at Plymouth Snowsports Centre

Andy Mossford, Senior Instructor at Plymouth Snowsports Centre, said:

“The course provided by Southern Ski Club for the Disabled was incredibly inspiring. The knowledge and techniques we gained have given our instructors greater confidence to continue supporting disabled people we already welcome at our centre, and we are excited to now be able to offer deaf, blind, visually impaired, deaf blind, amputee and neurodivergent friendly sessions as part of our current programme.”

“As a family-friendly centre, we truly believe that skiing should be accessible to everyone. We are also working towards being able to offer sessions for people with certain physical disabilities that require specialist equipment, just one example is the Kart-Ski designed to allow wheelchair users to enjoy skiing, we have begun seeking quotes and exploring funding avenues to make this possible in Plymouth. Our aim is to give people who have never had the opportunity to ski the chance to experience the sport, while also supporting those who want to continue developing their skills.”

Rehab Engineering is not always about complicated technical things. Sometimes it’s just noticing the small stuff.

This one happens to be local to me but the loss of hydrotherapy access or provision (which is a national problem) has such a negative impact on peoples rehab potential.
Just another example of a short sighted penny-pinching exercise to move a few £££s from a commissioners budget line with no thought or consideration for the long term consequences or health benefits to the people who need these facilities!

Proper fun & games yesterday - and it all started so well!
The weather and traffic played ball to allow the chair to be collected on time and it was on the bench at Unique Mobility ready for what should’ve be a relatively straightforward interfacing of a size 4 R82 Xpanda onto a Quantum Edge 3 Stretto base. Even some parts we hadn’t expected to arrive on time had been delivered early - virtually unheard of!
After a very productive hour or so of disassembling, the new parts came out of the box and everything unraveled 😬
In theory the new parts were correct for what we were hoping to achieve - or they might have been if the design hadn’t apparently been changed since our chair was manufactured!
Then we discovered two critical brackets were missing too 🤬
Left with the option of putting everything back as it was and delivering the chair back to the client unchanged or coming up with an on-the-hoof plan B, we (probably unwisely) chose the latter.
Reconfiguring the whole seat base, push handle orientation, reversing and swapping brackets left to right to gain seat width, tweaking mounting brackets to gain seat depth and some frantic hunting for materials and tools by Mark to fabricate a temporary solution for the missing footplate brackets we finally solved the original problem and had everything interfaced correctly.
5 hours non stop (and apologies to anyone within earshot that may have caught the odd choice word) and Mark’s uneaten lunch still sitting on the side as the chair was loaded up to deliver back.
I think we were both very relieved to hear the client and family were very pleased with the result 🎉.

Can you help return health and care equipment so others can use it?

Items such as walking frames, crutches, beds and short-term loan wheelchairs are often left unused in people’s homes once they're no longer needed.

You can return equipment by visiting the Medequip website for full details, dropping items off at the Medequip Roche Depot, or arranging a free collection for larger items by calling 01726 210477 or emailing [email protected]

There are no fines or penalties for returning old or damaged equipment.
