🚨 Hot Tub Safety Reminder for Island Accommodation Providers 🚨
We're raising awareness about hot tub safety, with a focus on preventing the growth of harmful bacteria like Legionella.
As part of this initiative, our Environmental Health team will be contacting and visiting holiday lets, guesthouses, and hotels across the Island.
💧 Why it matters
Hot tubs can become a health risk if not properly maintained. Warm water combined with organic matter creates ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive — including Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a serious type of pneumonia.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for:
* High fever
* Persistent cough
* Shortness of breath
Some people, particularly older adults and those with underlying health conditions, are at greater risk of severe illness.
If you feel unwell after using a hot tub, seek medical advice promptly.
✅ Supporting local businesses
This campaign follows national guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is designed to support businesses, helping them protect guests and meet safety standards — not to take enforcement action wherever possible.
Rachel Briscoe, Environmental Health Team Manager, said: “Hot tubs are a popular feature, but they must be carefully managed to prevent serious health risks. We’re encouraging operators to review their safety procedures and seek advice if needed.”
📋 Key reminders for providers:
* You have a legal duty to manage health and safety risks
* Carry out regular checks
* Keep clear maintenance records
* Follow up-to-date guidance
