It’s an important moment for the UK allergy community as advocacy groups Allergy UK and Anaphylaxis UK join forces - better collaboration can only strengthen the support and education available to people living with allergy and their families.

Anaphylaxis UK and Allergy UK today announce their intention to merge on the 1st of October, uniting to better serve the millions of people across the UK living with allergy and anaphylaxis - many of whom face daily uncertainty, risk, and barriers to the care and understanding they need.

This decision builds on more than 30 years of close collaboration, driven by a shared commitment to putting people first. Most recently, this has been demonstrated through the work to develop the National Allergy Strategy (NAS), demonstrating how working together can create real momentum for change.

By formally coming together, the organisations will strengthen their ability to listen to, support, and advocate for the allergy community. This is not about becoming bigger for its own sake, but about becoming stronger, bringing together expertise, insight, and experience to improve lives, influence policy, and ensure people feel safer, better supported, and heard.

With allergy now affecting a growing number of families across the UK, the need for clear leadership and coordinated action has never been greater. The merged organisation will work to a single, shared set of objectives focused on improving care, raising awareness, and driving the systemic change needed to reduce risk and improve outcomes.

At its heart, this merger is about people, ensuring that no one facing the challenges of allergy or anaphylaxis feels alone, and that the care, safety, and recognition they deserve are firmly on the national agenda.

A food allergy diagnosis can feel overwhelming very quickly.

Suddenly there are questions about:
✏️ school
🧸 nursery
🏷️ labels
🎉 parties
✈️ travel
😵 cross-contamination
🥜 allergic reactions

One of the most important early steps is making sure you understand:
∙ what the diagnosis actually means
∙ what needs to be avoided
∙ what are the risks
∙ how to manage things day to day

In this video, Dr Andrew Clark talks about some of the first things parents should focus on after diagnosis.

You do not have to figure this all out alone 🩵

Food allergy can feel incredibly overwhelming at first, especially with so much conflicting information online.

Here are 5 things parents often misunderstand about food allergy:
1. Food allergy and intolerance are not the same thing.
2. Positive allergy tests do not always tell the full story.
3. Good allergy management is about planning, not panicking.
4. Understanding allergies and what causes them can help to reduce anxiety and uncertainty.
5. Specialist support can make things feel much more manageable.

Food allergy and food intolerance are often confused, but they are very different.

A food allergy involves the immune system and can sometimes cause serious reactions. A food intolerance usually does not involve the immune system and tends to cause different symptoms.

Understanding the difference matters because:
✅ symptoms can look very different
✅ management may be different
✅ allergy testing may not always be appropriate

In this video, Dr Andrew Clark explains some of the key differences and why proper assessment is important.

Dr Andrew Clark is a Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and co-founder of Cambridge Allergy Partners.

Cambridge Allergy Partners offers specialist allergy consultations and remote-supported treatment pathways after initial consultation.
