Yorkshire Coast Sight Support

Yorkshire Coast Sight Support As a charity for people with sight impairment, we at YCSS pride ourselves with our great intentions, fantastic results, and ongoing support.

Having a sight impairment can be daunting, in fact, statistics show you are one of almost two million people in the UK who live with sight loss - that's around one in thirty people! Our support is slowly but surely making living with impaired sight more manageable.

We are grateful York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has highlighted this work.

Recently one of our members joined our CEO Colin and trustee Peter on an accessibility visit to look at signage and how easy it is for people with sight loss to get around Scarborough Hospital.

Thank you Anna & Dizzy for coming along and sharing your experience, it makes a real difference.

A big thank you to Colin, Peter, Anna, and Dizzy the guide dog, who recently visited Scarborough Hospital to help us improve our signage and make our services more accessible for people with visual impairments 🦮

As part of our Inclusive Built Environment Plan, one of our commitments is to carry out access audits across the Trust and, importantly, involve people with lived experience in the process. Their insight helps us understand how our buildings and services are experienced by the people who use them, and identify any potential barriers.

With this in mind, several members of Yorkshire Coast Sight Support kindly came along to the Willow Eye Unit to test out our signage and share their thoughts. They helped us identify areas where we can make improvements, ensuring that our signs are clearer, easier to navigate and more accessible for people with visual impairments.

It was fantastic to have their expertise and lived experience involved in the process, and we’re grateful for their time, honest feedback and support in helping us make sure our healthcare environments are inclusive and accessible for everyone 👏

☀️🌕Planning to watch the partial solar eclipse? Protect your eyesight!

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across Scotland on the evening of Wednesday 12 August. While it may be tempting to take a good look at this rare natural phenomenon, viewing the sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage.

Remember:
✅ Only use certified eclipse glasses or solar viewers
✅ Consider a safe indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector
❌ Never look directly at the sun
❌ Ordinary sunglasses won't protect your eyes
❌ Don't use binoculars, telescopes or cameras without specialist solar filters

If you notice blurred vision, blind spots or any changes to your sight, your local optometrist should usually be your first point of contact.

Optometrists can assess a range of eye conditions and help ensure you get the right care in the right place.

A big THANK YOU to some wonderful people in Scarborough.

Yesterday, while walking to the centre one of our Visually Impaired volunteers had a serious fall resulting in a dislocated and fractured elbow. A few very kind strangers immediately stopped to help him and showed him genuine care and compassion.

To those lovely people who stepped in without hesitation we thank you, your kindness made a difficult moment a little easier, it meant the world to him and those that care about him.

Small acts like yours really do make a big difference. Thank you again 🫶
