Ever heard of Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). Renate Bateman suffered with HG - throughout her pregnancy. She is still suffering from its long term effects.
We had not really heard of it but to watch your daughter continually throw up 30+ times a day, be unable to eat or drink and keep it down, throw up blood, be barely able to move, need life saving IV fluid drips, constant hospitalization, loss of other bodily functions, be losing weight during pregnancy instead of putting it on, to see her body stripped of vital nutrients every day brings fear into a mothers heart. Yes, in those dark nights we did wonder if she would make it or if the baby would. We worried about the long term effects of his devastating illness. Nightmare times of which that so many people are unaware.
Luckily, her partner William was amazing - best partner and husband ever! Also, Pregnancy Sickness Support (PPS) were a lifeline for them. PPS were able, despite limited funding, to offer some practical advice and understanding. Ren is now trying to pay that forward and help other sufferers of HG get even better support than she did. HG is a condition at the extreme end of the pregnancy sickness spectrum and it affects 1-3% of people with pregnancy sickness and is incredibly debilitating.
