🦷 Filling or Onlay – What's the Difference? 🦷

This before-and-after case by Dr Milan shows the replacement of old amalgam restorations with beautifully crafted ceramic onlays ✨

Many patients ask why an onlay is recommended instead of a filling.

A filling is placed directly into a tooth and is ideal for smaller areas of damage or decay. However, when a tooth has a very large filling or significant loss of structure, a filling may not provide enough long-term support.

A ceramic onlay is a custom-made restoration that covers and protects the weakened parts of the tooth, including the biting surface. It is carefully designed to restore strength, function and aesthetics while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Dr Mei Huang is a GDC-registered Specialist in Periodontics with extensive experience across Kent and London, and a Clinical Lecturer at UCL Eastman Dental Institute 🎓📚 With a strong academic background including a DMD, MSc, and PhD in Dental Biomaterials, she brings a highly evidence-based approach to patient care.

She provides specialist treatment in gum disease 🪥, peri-implant conditions 🦷, and periodontal plastic surgery including gum grafting 🌿—helping patients improve both oral health and aesthetics.

We’re excited to have her on board and to be able to offer even more advanced periodontal care to our patients at Fourways 💙
