Watching the final episode of Clarkson's Farm Season 5 last night was a tough watch — Jeremy dealing with the consequences of a devastating bTB breakdown on the farm.

Some of his questions as the "new boy" are actually the right ones to ask. Those of us who've lived with cattle and TB all our lives can sometimes be too accepting of the status quo.

Filmed in late summer/early autumn 2025, Jeremy has no doubt had plenty of good advice since. But if he, Kaleb, Charlie, or anyone else wants to know more about bTB — and what "Non-Visible Lesions" actually means — our episode with Sarah Tomlinson from TB Advisory Service, released 6th March 2025, is well worth a listen.

Good morning from a misty, damp North Dorset! Should burn off into a lovely day.

This week's seen first cut switches starting for some clients, plus the usual fine-tuning elsewhere.

Worth a special mention from this last week's Hook Farm walk — a young lad who started there on work experience is now working full time, and spoke really well on calf rearing at one of the stations. Brilliant to see, and a real credit to him and the farm.

Chew on this — with 30°C+ on the cards this week, heat stress can start from around 20°C depending on humidity. Plenty of water, plenty of shade — for your cattle and for yourself. Dry matter intakes drop in the heat, so consider increasing energy density in diets, but not through starch. Why don't you now Cud and consider? (Our skin cancer/melanoma episode from May is well worth a listen too.)

The first couple of Year Five episodes are edited and ready to go. And our cake-free robots episode has had a nice bump in interest this week — worth a listen if you haven't already.

This week's Herbal Leys episode is doing brilliantly too — already Top 25% by Thursday.

Great day yesterday at the AHDB Dairy Cream Award Winners Farm Walk at Hook Farm. 🐄

Hook Farm won two awards at last year's British Dairying Cream Awards — High Performance Dairy Farm Award and Fertility, Health & Welfare Award. What stood out most on the day, though, was how much they credited their team — both on farm and the wider advice around them — for getting there.

Well attended, lots of stations and speakers throughout, and a genuinely interesting day. You could see why they were winners.

Also great to catch up with former podcast guest James Yeatman from Cow Recovery — who picked up the Innovation Award at the same Cream Awards last year — kept busy chatting to attendees all day.

That's Season 4 done! 🎙️

The final episode is out now — herbal leys, recorded live at our Podcast Live event with a trial scientist, an agronomist and a farmer all giving their take.

Dr Jo Matthews, Germinal, on the science, Becci Shrimpton, Horizon Seeds, on the agronomy, and Ben Richards on what it actually looks like running a 100% forage, organic herd on herbal leys in Cornwall.

Real audience, real questions. A strong way to end the season.

Herbal leys can feel like a contradiction — a carefully chosen seed mix that refuses to look the same from month to month!

That's why we wanted a proper, practical conversation, recorded live at our Podcast Live event with a panel of specialists and a room full of questions.

Dr Jo Matthews, from Germinal, shares trial insights on species performance and what resilience really means in drought. Becci Shrimpton, from Horizon Seeds, brings the agronomy side — soil testing, pH and P and K, seedbed prep, and w**d control timing. Ben Richards gives the farmer's view from Cornwall, running a 100% forage, organic, once-a-day milking herd on herbal leys.

Recorded live, with real audience questions throughout. The last episode of Year Four — a great one to go out on!

Listen tomorrow at www.chewinthecud.com or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Good morning from a drying North Dorset — the rain has finally stopped!

A busy week. Mobility scoring locally, a quarterly catch-up with a dairy client, and a trip to Cereals 2026 on Thursday. Not the usual event for a dairy and beef nutritionist but plenty of livestock people there. The highlight? A beef client from Shropshire — worked with remotely for a year — spotted Andrew across the showground and called out his name. Lovely moment.

That evening, the AHDB/Barbers meeting on stress-free stock handling and mobility scoring with Jo Speed and Steve Paul, plus a great milk market update from Michael Masters.

This week also saw Dr Annie Williams from Mineral Advice Ltd join virtually to record a conversation on copper for Year Five — excess, deficiency, and the different forms available. One to look forward to.

And the podcast stats came up trumps — ChewintheCud is currently ranked 17th in the world for a dairy podcast on Feedspot. For a small independent, that's pretty special.

Chew on this — ChewintheCud is currently ranked 17th in the world for a dairy podcast on Feedspot, sitting alongside titles backed by major industry bodies and big business. Not bad for a small independent. Why don't you now Cud and consider?

Next Wednesday — the second podcast recorded at our Podcast Live event, with Jo Matthews from Germinal, Becci Shrimpton from Grainseed/Horizon, and Ben Richards from Cornwall on herbal leys. The last episode of Year Four — then Year Five begins!

Year Five recording is back underway! 🎙️

This afternoon we were joined virtually by Dr Annie Williams from Mineral Advice Ltd for a great conversation on copper — the risks of feeding too much, the different forms available, what copper does, and what deficiency looks like on farm.

One to look out for in either July or August, depending on the podcast we aren't allowed to talk about!

Yesterday was a long one — but a good one! 🐄

Cereals Event 2026 in the morning — it was a soggy start but cleared up later. Not the usual event but well worth the visit, and a real highlight was a random meeting a beef client from Shropshire for the first time in person after a year of working together remotely. He spotted Andrew across the showground — brilliant when that happens.

Didn't take many pictures in the rain!

Then in the evening, the AHDB Dairy/ Barber's Cheese meeting on mobility scoring and stress-free cattle handling with Jo Speed, Steve Paul and a great market update from Michael Masters. A really good evening.

A week in and Season 4, Episode 23 is well worth a listen if you haven't already. 🎙️

Kelli Hutchings and Matt Strickland on cake-free robotic milking — practical, commercial and honest about where it works and where it doesn't.
