☀️ When it’s too hot for a walk, enrichment takes centre stage! ☀️
With temperatures reaching 31°C earlier this week, it simply wasn’t safe for this handsome boy to be out exercising in the heat. Instead, we focused on activities that kept his mind engaged while helping him stay cool and comfortable.
We enjoyed some scent work in the garden, encouraging him to use his natural sniffing abilities to find treats, followed by a lick mat and snuffle mat indoors away from the heat.
Why is mental enrichment so important?
Mental enrichment allows dogs to use their natural behaviours such as sniffing, licking, problem-solving and foraging. These activities help reduce boredom, build confidence, lower stress levels and provide valuable mental stimulation.
Sniffing is particularly beneficial, as a large portion of a dog’s brain is dedicated to processing scent. Allowing them to explore and search for food can be surprisingly tiring and satisfying.
Studies have shown that mentally challenging activities can be just as exhausting as physical exercise. While it isn’t a direct replacement for daily walks long-term, 15–20 minutes of focused enrichment can help meet your dog’s needs when weather conditions make outdoor exercise unsafe.
Remember, on hot days it’s important to adapt your dog’s routine. Keeping them cool while providing appropriate mental stimulation is often far safer than risking heat-related illness. 🐾
