Today, our Head of Service Manager, Cara Brazier, PCAS Operations Manager Rachel Amory and Bernie, Primary Care Development Nurse at the ICB and part-time Respiratory Nurse supporting our Spirometry Project, visited The Limes Community Centre in Beighton as part of our ongoing Spirometry Project.
The aims of the project are to:
• Engage with local mining communities and raise awareness of respiratory conditions
• Raise awareness of how former miners may be more likely to develop lung conditions
• Educate the community on symptoms to look out for and how respiratory conditions can be managed.
The group meets every Thursday, primarily as a social gathering, with cake, bingo and plenty of lovely conversation. We were made to feel incredibly welcome and everyone was very engaged.
One lady pictured had been diagnosed with asthma but was unsure how to use her inhalers correctly. Bernie spent time demonstrating the correct inhaler technique, as well as checking for any other symptoms or concerns.
Other members of the group also took the opportunity to chat with Bernie about their lifestyle and general health.
The group leader, a 72-year-old former miner himself, shared how he encourages the regular group members to make positive changes to their health and lifestyle.
It was a really enjoyable and worthwhile morning, and a great opportunity to take conversations about respiratory health directly into the community.
Although she didn't win at bingo, Cara was very happy to take on the important roles of tea maker and cake passer! ☕🍰
