Who’s In Your Corner When The Pressure Builds?
A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
While I was there, I briefly met Sir Gareth Southgate, possibly the first Sir I’ve ever met!
We spoke about mental health, leadership and the importance of support around players, including his stance against the racist abuse directed at Black players over the years.
At the time, I hadn’t seen Dear England.
I watched it this week, and it really stayed with me.
What stood out was the focus on pressure, mindset and the psychology behind performance.
It reminded me of something I read about England and penalty shootouts: that part of the issue was not just technique, but the way pressure changes behaviour.
Research had even highlighted how quickly England players used to take penalties compared with other nations, almost as if they were trying to get the moment over with.
That really says something.
Because high-performance environments still need emotional support, psychological safety and trusted people around you.
One of the most powerful parts of Dear England was seeing the psychologist brought in to support the squad, not because they were weak, but because they were human.
Who’s in your corner when the pressure builds?
Whether it’s football, leadership, business or everyday life, so many people carry pressure quietly while trying to look like they’re fine.
Sometimes, the strongest thing we can do is recognise when we need support.
That’s why conversations around mental health matter.
I’ll link my free wellbeing resources below. If they help even one person pause, reflect, or reset, they’re worth using.
