The thing I hate most about my job…

Asking for money. 😩

I am proud. I am stubborn. I have a massive work ethic and an ingrained belief that if something needs doing, I should roll up my sleeves and get it done.

So asking for help feels horribly uncomfortable.

But yesterday, a Soberistas member wrote that she is now 13 years sober because of Soberistas.

THIRTEEN YEARS.

That is not just a number. That is a life reclaimed.

When I launched Soberistas in 2012 on an absolute shoestring, I simply wanted to create the place I had needed myself: somewhere people struggling with alcohol could speak honestly, without judgement or shame, and receive compassionate understanding from people who genuinely got it.

Today, Soberistas is a registered charity providing accessible, round-the-clock peer support to people who want to get—and stay—sober.

But we cannot continue doing that through hard work alone. We need funding to pay our operational costs and protect this essential service.

So I am swallowing my pride and doing the thing I hate.

I am asking for your help.

We’re looking for a GP 👩‍⚕️

Soberistas is a Sheffield-based charity and online sobriety community that has been supporting people to change their relationship with alcohol for almost 14 years.

We’re currently looking for a GP to take over our long-running Ask the Doctor feature, answering alcohol-related health questions submitted by our members.

✔️ Approx. 1–2 hours per month
✔️ Fully remote
✔️ £250 per month
✔️ Flexible around existing commitments

We’re particularly interested in hearing from GPs with an interest in alcohol-related health issues, lifestyle medicine, mental health, public health or behaviour change.

Most of us aren't just recovering from alcohol. We're recovering from years of abandoning ourselves.

That's what surprised me most about writing my memoir.

What started as a book about alcohol became a book about identity, self-trust, people pleasing, relationships, grief, ambition and the long journey back to myself.

Not because it has disappeared completely.

But because it no longer gets the final say.

That's a remarkable thing.
