Horatio's Garden has published its 2026 annual impact survey, which includes findings from Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre.

Of the patients surveyed:
• 78% said the garden helped them feel more independent
• 69% said it distracted them from pain
• 64% said they sleep better after spending time in the garden
• 53% said using the garden helps improve their hand and arm function
• 91% reported a significant positive impact on their mental health, and 86% said it made them feel more hopeful about the future

As a Regional Garden Partner, STEPS has been involved since the garden was planted in spring 2025, when a team of our volunteers worked alongside Head Gardener Ruth Calder and designers Harris Bugg Studio.

In November, our team will help plant 1,000 bulbs, and in December we will support the garden's Christmas Fayre.

Latest refurbishment of the Transitional Living Unit at STEPS Rehabilitation

The kitchen and lounge area in our four-bedded unit has undergone a complete refurbishment. The Transitional Living Unit (TLU) is a vital part of the facility, comprising four large bedrooms and a fully accessible shared kitchen and lounge/gaming area. Clients use the TLU to practise everyday living skills, including cooking and meal preparation, as part of their rehabilitation programme. This helps to build independence and prepare them for the transition home.

The space also provides a comfortable environment to relax and unwind at the end of the day, whether preparing meals, watching TV or playing video games, supporting a more typical daily routine while living at STEPS.

Following a car accident in 2023, John sustained a serious spinal cord injury. He spent three weeks in an induced coma and six months in hospital before a period of residential rehabilitation at STEPS Rehabilitation.

Throughout his recovery, John kept writing, first in the notes app on his phone and later with the support of STEPS Neurologic music therapist Rebekah. His new album, Peace I Can't Wake To, draws on his final coma dream and his time in intensive care, and is released today.

John is also raising awareness of autonomic dysreflexia, a serious condition that can affect people with spinal cord injuries, through his petition calling for better training for health professionals.

Working daily with people whose lives have been irrevocably altered following road traffic accidents is something that the founders of STEPS Rehabilitation, Jules,Toria and Ray have personal experience of.

On the 16th October 1992, Alexander Boulger tragically died, along with a friend, in a minibus accident whilst travelling with his university rugby team to a match in Bath. Alex was the brother of Jules, Toria, Edward and the son of Ray and Lana Boulger. He was just 19 years old, and as a 2nd year dental student at Guys Hospital, London, had his whole adult life ahead of him.

The ripple effects following such a tragedy extend beyond the immediate family, it impacts those who survived the crash, the emergency teams who attended the scene, and friends – and in this instance, fellow students and housemates.

In 1992 people didn’t really talk about the grieving process or recognise the impact that such a traumatic event can have on you, particularly on young people. Professional support didn’t exist in the same way as it does now, and people tended to navigate thoughts and emotions on their own.

That's why, when a group of Alex's student friends got in touch with Jules and Toria and came to Sheffield for a visit, it was a chance to reflect on that period of their lives and - through a maturer lens - acknowledge the emotional burden everyone had carried.

It was also a chance to celebrate Alex's life - sharing funny stories and reminiscing on those heady student years which, as anyone who has experienced university life will know, have the quality of a protected bubble of time.

The afternoon and evening that everyone spent together was incredibly special, and a reminder that life is short, so make the most of every moment.
