Last week we had our first ever in-person networking event for Ablepreneurs 🥳

It was an intimate and open group.

We discussed running a business when your body or brain (or both) sometimes fight against you, and we also discussed when and how to disclose a health condition to others.

We left with plenty of food for thought 🤔

💜 100 Ablepreneurs. 100 Stories.

For Bianca Brathwaite, entrepreneurship isn't about having unlimited energy, capacity or productivity.

It's about having agency.

After being diagnosed with PMDD, Bianca found herself trying to navigate a corporate environment where she felt she had to mask what was happening and perform consistently, even when her ability to function could change dramatically.

Eventually, she chose a different way of working.

Three years later, Bianca runs Mindset Maintenance alongside her freelance work, giving her the freedom to flex her diary, respond to what her body and brain need, and define success differently.

She earns less than she did in corporate life.

But she hasn't dreaded a Monday morning in three years.

And for Bianca, happiness and freedom count too.

💜 100 Ablepreneurs. 100 Stories.

In 2022, Alyce walked into hospital.

She didn't walk out.

A spinal cord injury changed almost every part of the life she'd known, including a career and business built entirely around horses.

Faced with rebuilding her life as a full-time wheelchair user, Alyce began exploring what she could do, initially from bed.

She qualified to teach English, volunteered to support Ukrainian refugees, began tutoring young people, built a virtual admin business and became a published author.

Today, Alyce still misses parts of the life she had before. She's candid about the setbacks, support and accessibility barriers she's encountered while rebuilding.

But there's something she wants others facing their own darkest moments to know:

There is a life worth living. And you don't have to find your way there alone.

I’ve been blown away by the people booking for National Ablepreneurs Day.

We’ve got:
Disabled founders launching new ventures
Chronic illness entrepreneurs juggling business and health
Neurodivergent creatives building incredible things
Allies who want to make business more inclusive
Local organisations wanting to learn and support

At 32, Jeannette Jones was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Years later, as fatigue and other symptoms made traditional employment increasingly difficult, she was eventually medically retired from work.

It could have felt like an ending.

Jeannette decided it was time for a change instead.

Becoming a grandmother gave her a new motivation: creating a better, safer and healthier future for her granddaughter.

So she built AnyGreenWillDo.

Today, with adaptations and support that help her work around her MS, Jeannette is continuing to build her business on her terms.

What actually happens at an Ablepreneurs® networking meeting?

Yesterday we held our first in-person Ablepreneurs networking event and it confirmed exactly why this community needs to exist.

Yes, we talked about businesses, careers, what we do and the connections we could make.

But some of the most valuable conversations were about belonging.

A few people admitted they weren’t sure whether they should come.

Whether they fitted the labels.

Whether their diagnosis or circumstances meant Ablepreneurs was really for them.

Whether this would be another space that claimed to understand disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people but didn’t really get it.

Then one attendee said something that stayed with us:

Her heart told her to come. Once she arrived, she knew it was the right room.

Ablepreneurs isn’t about making people prove they fit a particular label before they’re allowed through the door.

It’s about creating a professional community where people can connect, develop and grow, while recognising that we don’t all work, think, communicate or manage our energy in the same way.

There were seven of us around the table yesterday.

Next month, we’d like that table to get a little bigger.

💜 100 Ablepreneurs. 100 Stories.

Lorraine Hamilton has reinvented her working life more than once.

At 54, after years working in admin, she retrained to drive coaches and open-top sightseeing buses.

Then her health intervened.

**So she retrained again.**

Living with fibromyalgia, arthritis and anxiety meant traditional working hours became increasingly difficult, but Lorraine's own search for ways to manage her health had already introduced her to something that would eventually become a new career.

Reiki.

Almost seven years ago, she created Holistic Hands Ltd.

Today, working for herself gives Lorraine the flexibility to work around her health while doing something that's become incredibly important to her: supporting other people with theirs.
