Day 50 - Approaching Kirk Yetholm and the border with England (tomorrow). Seven weeks into the adventure. Five weeks actual walking and plenty of rest and recovery days as well as spending time with Phil.

I have had a hard few days where I hit my first moment of homesickness. I reduced my mileage and split a day over a rest day doing 6 miles each day. I’ve had time in friendly cafes and did a FaceTime call to friends from work who counted the call as on of their mental health duty calls for the day!
I think the magnitude of the journey caught up with me as well as tiredness after a few poor nights sleep.
The gentle green lanes of St Cuthbert’s Way after Jedburgh and some river walking along the Tweed were just what I needed. No big vistas just soft green and flowers. I am back on the big vistas again today on Wide Open Hill (the highest point on St Cuthbert’s Way) looking back towards Scotland and forwards towards the Cheviots and the start of the Pennine Wsy. It is a strange feeling knowing that I have walked from the horizon as far as I can see from up here!

Anna and Molly John o'Groats to Land's End adventure update...

Well we've made it to Edinburgh 371 miles walked (and cycled) so far.

After the Northern Highlands we have completed the Great Glen Way and the West Highland Way and cycled Glasgow to Edinburgh along the Forth and Clyde Canal!

My husband Phil met us at Glasgow with bikes and doggy bike trailer! Molly was a star and took to her luxury carriage really well.

We have a few rest days in Edinburgh (massage and wild saunas booked!) before setting off on towards the border with England.

Drumnadrochit to Fort William
18th - 23rd April

The Great Glen a landscape shaped by rupture - a huge geological fault line running East to West across the Highlands.

It is scar the Earth has never hidden. A reminder that even brokenness can become a pathway...

This week I have walked alongside memories of lost family, I have had tender moments remembering Nathan and feeling sad he is no longer alive to walk under a big sky, to be moved by the beauty of the landscape opening up, or to feed cheese scraps to a chaffinch on a sunny loch beach.

I have had heavy pack leg twinges, done stretches on the floor of a campsite laundry, been hosted by the kindest lady with 12 collies, popped and dressed my first blisters and cursed dehydrated camp meals as I force myself to eat!

The sun came out, butterflies danced and larch trees put on a vibrant green cloak, forest birds sang and the waters of the lochs gently lapped my sore feet.

It is all welcome the lows and the highs 😊πŸ₯ΎπŸ•πŸΎπŸ’š

As I have been missing my weekly sauna in Dorset I decided to set off in search of some Scottish coastal saunas
ostara

Wow 🀩
what a relaxing couple of rest days spent checking out the wild saunas of the Moray Coast! It's not all trudging on this JOGLE adventure πŸ₯Ύ

I have enjoyed meeting the local sauna lovers and spent a gentle few hours wandering around Cullen with Molly browsing in 'ohh that's nice!' shops (aka gift shops and bookshops) Molly felt right at home meeting and greeting - and eating dog treats.

it was lovely to chat 😊

Days 10 and 11 Oykel Bridge to Loch Vaich

Day 9 was a rest day πŸ›ŒπŸ’€

These two days saw us walking through remote Glens on seemingly unending estate tracks. I still had Gabe for company until Strathpeffer. We walked through the rewilded estate at Alladale and enjoyed the young trees and birdsong. It was a beautiful sunny morning as we walked through Gleann Mor - pretty warm so l had a dip in the river and felt like a new woman!

I also deployed my secret morale weapon - a tester of the small batch organic perfume I love from Ffern it felt so good to be clean and to have the small touch of luxury to lift my spirits after a cold wild camp!

The next Glen by Loch Vaich had a more bleak feel to it. This is where we decided to make camp in an abandoned hut that had been cleaned out at one end. I regretted all the haunted Bothy podcasts I have listened to in my time!

There was the chill air of a Scandi Noir murder mystery about the place. We were around 10 miles from the nearest road at this point and I don’t think I would have slept there if I had been alone! We were, however, grateful for the four walls and roof when there was wind and rain during the night.

Days 7 and 8
Forsinard to Crask Inn

I had company for the week with Gabe joining me.

We set off away from the Flow Country towards Sutherland and more into the mountains.

Day 7 was a long day - pushing onto Loch Choire bothy. The simple mountain hut is named after the former gamekeeper of the estate, Albert, 'Bert's Bothy. We later learnt the irony of this as Albert had guarded the estate from terrified walkers with a shot gun! In spite of Scottish Right to Roam laws. Now his hut hosts weary walkers πŸ₯Ύ ⛰️

We pushed on over some questionable bridges and through some very boggy terrain to reach the comfort of the Crask Inn before Storm Dave hit. There was wind and snowfall overnight and we were very glad to be safe inside!

Molly was happy lounging in front of a blazing log burner πŸ• 🐾 I suspect she is not a wilderness dog at heart!

My walk is in memory of my late brother Nathan Ferris and I am raising money for Mind the Mental Health Charity. Link in comments below πŸ‘‡ πŸ˜ŠπŸΎπŸ•πŸ•οΈ
