What looks like the simplest part of class is often one of the most important 👣
There’s a reason Pilates has traditionally started with footwork from the very beginning.
Before we move into the rest of the class, we use footwork to build connection, awareness, alignment, and control through the entire body.
Your feet are your foundation 🤎
They influence how your ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and spine move and support you.
Footwork helps us:
• wake up the feet and lower body
• improve alignment and balance
• build strength evenly through both legs
• connect the core to movement
• create stability and control for the rest of class
• improve mobility through the feet and ankles
• develop better posture and movement patterns
Even when we mix things up and add more contemporary variations, the original sequence still gives us so much information about the body.
Toes, arches, heels, tendon stretch — every position has a purpose. Each variation challenges the body differently while encouraging precision, control, coordination, and flow.
It may look simple, but good footwork is full-body work ✨
The way you press into the footbar can tell us a lot about:
• weight distribution
• muscular imbalances
• posture
• compensation patterns
• overall movement quality
When we slow it down and focus on the foundations, the whole body benefits.
Strong, connected movement starts from the ground up 🤎
