How can I trust my gut when my anxiety is telling me that everything is dangerous and frightening?

This is a difficult one because when you are in a highly sensitised state nearly everything can trigger an adrenaline dump & a heap of exaggerated anxious thoughts & it can be hard to see the clear picture through the haze.

Firstly, it gets easier with time, as you move out of the sensitised state you have more periods of clarity & calm & itโ€™s just easier to be sure of your gut feelings vs anxiety/panic.

I will write a blog post on this because I have a lot to say on it, but for now:

โš ๏ธ If you are having a panic attack or feeling particularly anxious consider if you are actually in any danger currently - if you are actually in danger (someone or something is going to hurt you) then you must absolutely trust your gut & leave, immediately. You WILL know if you are in real danger ok, so if there is a threat to you then please do listen to your gut & leave.

โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน Usually gut feelings are associated with people or situations where we feel that something is just โ€˜offโ€™. Anxiety can absolutely feel like this too, the difference being that anxiety ebbs and flows where as a gut feeling ultimately will be sticky.. If you have a persistent feeling about someone or something which does not subside in periods of calm then itโ€™s time to trust that gut!

๐Ÿ—ฃ Talk to a trusted friend or family member, ask them whether they think your feelings are based on something. Trusting your gut can actually be difficult for a non-anxious person too at times & it can really help to talk to someone about how youโ€™re feeling to see if theyโ€™ve noticed that something might be โ€˜offโ€™โ€ฆ

๐Ÿ”’ Contemplate similar situations where you HAVE been right about a gut feeling - compare that to your current feeling and situation, how does it compare?

๐Ÿ’ญ Therapy is a brilliant way to make sense of thoughts and feelings - just talking out loud can help us to sort through the clutter in our heads and see things with great clarity.

๐Ÿ’ Be kind to yourself. Working with instincts isnโ€™t easy and takes practice, so does the road to disordered anxiety recoveryโ€ฆ But you absolutely got this! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š

You canโ€™t out run anxiety, anxious thoughts, sensations, fear, difficult emotions, feelings, adrenaline floods, panic etc but itโ€™s instinctual to try to run so we keep on trying, resisting everything and trying to keep our heads above water for as long as we can, before drowning in it.

You donโ€™t need to run, you can ride that wave. Let the difficult feelings, sensations and thoughts flow through you, donโ€™t resist them, and the results are profound!

This is a skill that is learnt through practice. Everytime you feel this way, try to do the opposite of your instincts to run and resist. It feels wrong but itโ€™s the most effective (if not only) way to break the cycle. Youโ€™ll be surprised at how quickly this gets easier! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

It also feels very relieving to let the wave pass through you. You can feel the energy and tension releasing.

Have you mastered this skill yet or are you just starting out? Let me know below! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜€

When you feel something, anything, take a look at it, allow it to exist and then release it.

This is harder said than done, especially when you have a sensitised nervous system, I know that. The key here is practice. This really does become easier with practice, I promise.

Reminder: Your feelings arenโ€™t dangerous, what you feel cannot hurt you or cause you to have a breakdown. You can feel ALLL the things and youโ€™ll still be okay โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Youโ€™ve likely asked this question countless times and received a variety of ultimately unsatisfactory answers.

The reason for this is that we are unwittingly asking the wrong questionโ€ฆ

The goal for recovery from Anxiety Disorders is ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ to โ€˜๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ ๐—ผ๐—ณโ€™ anxiety, as anxiety is a perfectly ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—น human response to a perceived threatโ€ฆ

The goal is to learn through ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ and ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ that anxious sensations are ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ dangerous or something to be feared.

In time, and with acceptance and practice, easily triggered (disordered) anxiety diminishes to more normal levels.

When fight or flight kicks in and the adrenaline floods our bodies [enter a multitude of uncomfortable to down right terrifying symptoms here] we immediately try to resist, fight, flee or distract from how we are feeling. We will do anything to escape from how we are feeling as it feels as though we are in grave danger.

Unfortunately non of these things work, as it simply reinforces the brains belief that there is a real threat.

The best way to intercept this loop is to do something differently!

When we feel the adrenaline drop and our breath tightens and our hearts race and our mind goes into overdrive, when ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น we want to do is follow our instincts to run, fight, escape etc, this is ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—น๐˜† the time to ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฝ resistingโ€ฆ This teaches the brain that there is ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด to fear, that itโ€™s made a mistake and that there is actually no real dangerโ€ฆ

I will write a blog post about this soon, in much more depth. So stay tuned for that. And let me know in the comments if you found this helpful โฌ‡๏ธโค๏ธ

Letโ€™s talk about recovery โ€ฆ We all know there is no such thing as a quick fix, unfortunately - if ONLY that were the case.

Healing takes time, lots of it, and a willingness to take small steps towards a better future for yourself.

For anxiety sufferers, this means that small steps out of our current comfort zones need to be taken regularly, and soon these small steps add up into big leaps forward. Even when we feel as though we have gone โ€˜backwardsโ€™ this is all part of the journey forwards. Recovery is not an overnight thing, and neither is it linear. The most important thing to remember is just to keep going, one tiny step at a time ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Looking back now, how far have you come?
