WHiST (Women's Health in South Tyneside) Working for Women's Well Being
Follow us to keep up to date with what's happening at WHiST

We take a holistic approach to health around physical and emotional well being acknowledging the fact that physical and emotional health impact on each other. We believe that services should be available to all women regardless of age, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation or financial considerations. We work with women experiencing a range of physical and mental health problems, but we also place importance on working with women who are well, in order to help them stay that way.

We’re beginning our 40th year celebrations!
Over the next year, we’ll be sharing stories from WHiST’s history and celebrating the members, staff, tutors, volunteers, trustees and funders past and present who have made WHiST what it is today.
Our Heritage Project will help us look back at the people, memories and moments that have shaped WHiST since 1986.
We hope you’ll enjoy looking back with us, and we’d love you to share your own memories in the comments as we go!

Asia and Debra had a fabulous time at the South Tyneside College Freshers’ Event on Wednesday.

Thank you to the college for inviting us and to all the students who stopped by our table for a chat. It was lovely to share information and advice, hand out our self-care packs and see you choosing from our collection of little resin ducks, flamingos and frogs! 🦆🦩🐸

We hope everyone has a brilliant year ahead, and remember that WHiST is here if you need us.

Tish Murtha was one of the significant women we celebrated as part of WHiST’s 40th anniversary.
Born in South Shields, Tish became known for her powerful photographs documenting women, young people and working-class communities in the North East.
Her landmark collection, Vandalism on a Grand Scale, has now been published in a newly reworked edition. Her photographs are also on display at Baltic until April 2027.
You can visit the exhibition for free and buy the book in person or online using the link in the shared post.

Vandalism on a Grand Scale brings Tish Murtha’s landmark body of work back into print in a newly reworked publication, with a new sequence, updated texts and a renewed sense of purpose for younger generations.

Born in South Shields in 1956, Murtha returned to Newcastle from university to document life in her Elswick community, capturing the social impact of industrial decline.

This new edition returns one of the defining works of British documentary photography to circulation.
Tish Murtha’s photorgaphs are also exhibiting at Baltic until April 2027.

Take a piece of the exhibition home with you. Shop in person or online at https://shop.balticmill.com 🛍️
