Anti-hair loss shampoos are wasting your money. Here’s the truth. 🚫

There’s no reliable scientific evidence that anti-hair loss shampoos can effectively treat hair loss or conditions like alopecia. Relying on these products might only delay the proper treatment you actually need.

Hair loss has many possible causes such as androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia and each needs a different treatment. The first step isn’t buying a shampoo, it’s finding out what’s actually causing your hair loss through a proper diagnosis.

Remember: cosmetic products aren’t medications. Shampoos legally cannot claim to treat hair loss, because they’re not required to prove any treatment effect. Medications are. And hair loss needs actual medication, not a bottle from the shower shelf.

PS: most “anti-hair loss” shampoos, if you look at the small text on the bottle, actually specify that they help with hair loss due to breakage, not clinical hair loss conditions. That’s a huge difference. Breakage is a cosmetic issue. Clinical hair loss needs a diagnosis and proper treatment.

You can now see me as a permanent member of the faculty for the PGDip Trichology and Hair Sciences at Diploma MSc | Postgraduate courses for healthcare professionals , validated by the University of South Wales . 🎓

Teaching on this programme means helping the next generation of healthcare professionals build genuine, evidence-based expertise in diagnosing and managing hair and scalp conditions. Trichology isn’t a regulated profession in the UK, which means anyone can call themselves a trichologist, regardless of their training or clinical background.

For patients, that makes it genuinely hard to know who to trust and all too often people spend time and money on advice that isn’t grounded in real science. That’s exactly why rigorous, university validated education in this field matters so much to me. Equipping qualified healthcare professionals with proper, evidence-based knowledge is one of the most powerful ways we can raise standards across the board and make sure patients get the safe, informed, compassionate care they deserve.

Most of us were never taught how to wash our hair. Here is how I do it, as a Clinical Trichologist and NHS Dermatology Specialist Nurse.

1️⃣ Conditioner and masks belong on the lengths, not the scalp. They are made for the hair shaft. On the roots they mostly add buildup and for some scalps that means irritation and flaking, not shine.

2️⃣ Cleanse the scalp with the pads of your fingers or a soft scalp massager, not your nails. That gentle movement lifts flakes and lets the shampoo actually reach the skin. It matters most if you have dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

3️⃣ Put the shampoo on your scalp, not down the lengths. The scalp is where the sebum, oil and flakes sit, so that is what needs cleansing. The lather rinses through your ends on the way out, which is enough and it stops you drying them out.

The short version: treat your scalp and your lengths as two different things. Cleanse the scalp, condition the ends.

Any questions? Ask me below or send this to someone who still scrubs shampoo through their ends.

For years I believed my hair was the problem. It was not. What was missing was knowledge, mine and everyone’s around me.

That is why I do what I do now. As a Clinical Trichologist, NHS Dermatology Specialist Nurse and Lecturer in Trichology, I get to give people the answers I never had: a proper diagnosis, the evidence and a plan that actually fits them. This week took me to London, filming with as an expert in hair and scalp health. The thing I was once mocked for became the thing I know best. And if your hair or scalp has ever made you feel small or you have been told it is just stress and sent on your way, that is exactly who I do this for.

Have you ever felt dismissed about your hair or scalp? Tell me below, or send this to someone who needs to read it.

PS: a huge thank you to , and stokelyhoward for making the whole day so easy and fun. I felt completely at home. ☺️

A flaky scalp is not the same as a dry scalp. 🆘

Right next to every hair follicle sits a sebaceous gland and it produces sebum continuously. That is oil. Your scalp is one of the oiliest areas of the entire body, which is exactly why true dryness there is far less common than people assume.
So when you see flakes, dryness is usually not the cause. In most cases it is dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis and the two sit on the same spectrum.

Behind both is a yeast called Malassezia, which lives on everyone’s scalp. It feeds on sebum and breaks it down, releasing fatty acids. In people who are sensitive to those by-products, the scalp becomes irritated and sheds skin faster than it should. That shedding is the flaking you see. It also explains why the problem is not poor hygiene and why washing more is not the answer on its own.

Dandruff is the mild end: white or grey flakes, often with an itch. Seborrhoeic dermatitis sits further along: yellowish, greasier scale on skin that looks red or inflamed.

If you want to treat it, the NHS advises an anti-dandruff shampoo containing one of three ingredients: selenium sulphide, ketoconazole or coal tar with salicylic acid. Give it a month before you judge whether it works and be prepared to try more than one as it’s normal to relapse.

One caution: flakes are not always dandruff. Psoriasis, eczema and a reaction to a hair product can look similar and are managed differently. See your GP, Clinical Trichologist or Dermatologist if there is no improvement after a month, if your scalp is red or swollen or if you have flaky, itchy patches on your face or body as well.

This is education, not a diagnosis. If your scalp has been bothering you for a while, it deserves a proper look.

3 tips for a healthy scalp from a Trichologist and Dermatology Specialist Nurse 👩🏼‍⚕️🔬

Your scalp is the foundation for healthy hair, but so much of what we’re told about scalp care is either oversimplified or plain wrong. Here are three things I want every one of you to know:

1. Not every shampoo is going to work for you. Every scalp is unique. The key is finding what your scalp responds well to, not what an influencer swears by.

2. Washing frequently is healthy. Regular cleansing removes oil, sweat, and dead skin, creating the right environment for hair growth. It does not cause hair loss or thinning, that’s a myth.

3. Be careful with oiling your scalp. For many people, applying oils to the scalp can worsen dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, because it feeds the yeast (Malassezia) involved in these conditions.

A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair.

So excited to have been featured in talking shampoo ingredients and scalp health! 🔬🧴

A reminder I’ll always stand by: sulfates, silicones and parabens are not your enemies. These are well-studied, regulated ingredients, the fearmongering around them simply isn’t backed by science.

What actually matters? Finding what works for YOUR scalp and hair type. 💡
