Jeremy Clarkson has done something important this week.
Not because he spoke about prostate cancer. But because he spoke about treatment.
That may sound like a small distinction, but it matters.
For years, the conversation around prostate cancer has focused on diagnosis.
And diagnosis is important.
But what happens next matters too.
What are all the treatment options?
What are all the likely outcomes?
What questions should patients be asking?
Jeremy spoke about his treatment in the final episode of his hit Prime series Clarkson’s Farm and stated he had 10% of his prostate removed using ultrasound, and that was just the bit with the cancer in.
That would indicate a minimally invasive treatment option such as HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) or maybe cryotherapy, both of which help to preserve normal function and drastically reduce the chance of urinary incontinent and sexual problems.
For many men, a prostate cancer diagnosis is followed by discussions around surgery or radiotherapy – and in many cases that is the only and best option.
What is often missing is a wider conversation about all treatment choices, not just what is available locally – and that should always mean being fully informed of all the appropriate options.
Not every man will be suitable for every treatment. And no single treatment is right for everyone.
But every man deserves to understand the full range of options available to him before making life-changing decisions.
At Prost8, that's exactly what we work to achieve. See prost8.org.uk for more….
Because men cannot choose treatments they have never been told about.
