The Science of Sound | Part 4
Chronic Pain & Anxiety: The Hidden Connection
Have you ever noticed that your pain feels worse during times of stress?
This is not your imagination. Chronic pain and anxiety are deeply connected through the nervous system.
When the body feels threatened, the nervous system moves into protection mode. Breathing may become shallower, muscles can tighten, sleep can become disrupted, and the brain may become more alert to signs of danger.
Over time, this can create a cycle: Pain increases stress, stress increases nervous system sensitivity and a sensitised nervous system can make pain feel stronger.
The body and nervous system are constantly communicating, and emotional wellbeing can influence how those signals are processed.
Research suggests that supportive practices such as music, sound, relaxation and mindfulness may help calm the nervous system, reduce stress responses and support emotional regulation.
Sound therapy works with rhythm, vibration and gentle sensory input to create moments where the body can begin to shift from a state of alertness towards relaxation.
