Sexpression St Andrews

Sexpression St Andrews We are the St Andrews brand! Sexpression: St Andrews is the University of St Andrews branch of Sexpression: UK! Promote individual self-esteem and empowerment
3.

"Sexpression:UK is a near-peer independent UK charity with the goal of empowering young people to make decisions about relationships and sex by running informal and comprehensive RSE in the community." Sexpression: St Andrews is a student-led charity which aims to promote peer education through delivering sex and relationship lessons to young people around Fife! Lessons include loads of important

topics such as puberty, contraception, consent and STIs. Ultimately by delivering these lessons, we aim to:

1. Create opportunities to discuss sexual health in an open, non-judgmental environment
2. Encourage respect for personal beliefs and values
4. Facilitate informed decision-making and autonomy regarding sex and sexual health
5. Ensure that young people have the skills to access sources of confidential advice

Our lessons are very informal, lots of fun, and studies have shown that near-peer education means school students are more likely to get involved in discussions, ask questions and stimulate debate about sex and relationships. We would love to have you volunteer with us! There are no requirements except that you are a student and can obtain a PVG via the Union, but message us for more details on how to do that! Why get involved? Volunteering with Sexpression is a great opportunity to develop any interest you may have in sexual health and peer education. It's a fantastic way to boost your communication skills and will no doubt look awesome on your CV! All volunteers will be fully trained in lesson delivering and child protection before entering schools. Want to get involved? We're always looking for NEW MEMBERS! So if you think you might be interested or want to get any more information, then please feel free to get in contact! Watch this space for any news on upcoming social events! Welcome to our second post in our s*xual health in the media series. This post is around the rise of the spread of mpox ( formally known as the monkeypox virus) that was observed in 2022.

This post aims to explain what Mpox is, how it's transmitted, the symptoms of Mpox, to highlight the resources available and the break the stigmas surrounding Mpox.

This post highlights that mpox is not a s*xually transmitted disease but is passed on by close proximity to an infected person. This in turn means that due to nature of s*x this means that s*x is an opportunity of transmission of the virus.

Welcome back to our series on different methods of contraception. This week we’re talking about The Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill. This pill you take once a day (at the same time), every day for 21 days. Then you stop taking the pill for 7 days, during which you will have a bleed. Once the 7 days are up, start the pill again! You are protected against pregnancy throughout the whole month provided you have taken it correctly.

The pill helps prevent pregnancy but does not protect against STIs. It can help lighten periods and reduce the symptoms associated with periods. Side effects such as headaches and breast tenderness usually reduce with prolonged use, if they don’t - you may want to consider changing methods of contraception. Although the risks sound scary, they are rare. Pregnancy increases your chance of developing a blood clot much more than using the combined pill does.

Other pills such as the progesterone-only pill (POP) are available and are quite different. The POP may be for you if you cannot use the combined pill. This may be because you can’t take oestrogen-containing medications, are susceptible to blood clots or have unwanted side-effects using the combined pill.

The pill is available from your GP or local s*xual health clinic. Always be honest with your healthcare provider, read the information that comes with your medication and ask for more information if you need it – that is what they are there for!

Disclaimer: although this post is based on facts, the rating system is subjective, and opinions may differ! Side effects will vary from person to person. For more information, please look at: https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/contraception/combined-pill
