Music: More Than Just Something We Listen To 🎶

Have you ever heard a song you haven’t listened to for years and, within seconds, you’re back in another time?

You remember the people, the place, the feeling. Sometimes you even remember the words without thinking about them.
That’s the wonderful thing about music.

For older people, music can be much more than entertainment. Research shows that it can support mood and emotional wellbeing, reduce anxiety and help people feel more connected to others. There is also growing evidence that music therapy can support memory and cognitive function.

But you don’t need music therapy for music to make a difference.
It might be an old favourite playing in the living room. Singing along. Tapping your feet. Having a dance in the kitchen. Or getting dressed up and going to a concert.

We see this with our clients.
Our lovely S., aged 92, recently enjoyed dancing with her carer to one of her favourite songs. ❤️ It was such a simple moment, but one full of laughter, movement and joy.

Our clients also enjoy going to concerts and live performances. For some, it’s the music they love. For others, it’s the excitement of getting ready, going out and sharing the experience with someone.
And for people living with dementia, familiar music can be particularly special. Even when other memories become harder to reach, a familiar song can sometimes bring back a feeling, a smile or a sense of recognition.

That’s why we think these moments matter.
Because care isn’t only about medication, meals and appointments.
It’s also about dancing to a favourite song, singing along, going to a concert and enjoying the things that make life feel like your own. ❤️

🎶 Sometimes, a song can bring back more than a memory. It can bring back a feeling.

More than 55 million people worldwide are living with dementia, and Alzheimer's disease accounts for up to 70% of cases. Every family affected reminds us why awareness, research, and compassionate care matter.

This year has brought encouraging news from the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) 2026:
1. Earlier diagnosis is becoming a reality. New blood tests are now showing around 90% accuracy in helping identify Alzheimer's in primary care, making diagnosis quicker, more affordable, and far less invasive.

2. A major new prevention study has been launched. The international PROTECT-Cog trial will investigate whether combining healthy lifestyle changes—such as regular exercise, a Mediterranean-style diet, better sleep, social engagement, and management of blood pressure and diabetes, with new medicines can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

3. While there is currently no guaranteed way to prevent Alzheimer's, research shows that looking after your brain can make a difference. Staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, keeping your mind challenged, staying socially connected, getting quality sleep, and managing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hearing loss, and smoking can all help reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

At New Age Care, we believe that every person living with dementia deserves dignity, independence, and compassionate support. Together, we can raise awareness, encourage early conversations, and give hope to families across our communities.

A Wonderful Day Out at Dudley Living Museum!

Client J., carers Sam, Danielle and little Louis enjoyed a fantastic day stepping back in time at Dudley Living Museum!

From exploring the fascinating coal mines and historic shops to enjoying fish and chips together, the day was full of interesting discoveries, conversation and happy memories. They also explored the canal yard, where parts of Peaky Blinders were filmed, before finishing with some special keepsakes from the gift shop.

Client J. said they really enjoyed the day! ❤️

At New Age Care, we believe that meaningful experiences, companionship and making happy memories are all part of living well.

When Is It Time to Consider Live-In Care?

Sometimes, there isn’t one big moment when you know it’s time for more support. The signs can appear slowly.

You may find yourself worrying between care visits, visiting your loved one several times a day, helping with meals and medication, or rearranging your own life to make sure they are safe.

And perhaps the most important question is: Could they continue living safely and happily at home with the right support?

Our latest blog explores the signs that it may be time to consider live-in care- and how the right support can help someone remain at home, maintain their independence and give families greater peace of mind.

Starting a conversation about Power of Attorney can feel sensitive, but it’s often an important step in protecting your loved one’s future wishes and wellbeing.
Choose a calm, relaxed moment and approach the topic gently. You might start by sharing your concern for their independence and how planning ahead can actually help them stay in control for longer.

Try to listen more than you speak. It’s natural for people to feel worried or defensive, so giving them space to ask questions and express their feelings can make a big difference.

It can also help to explain that a Power of Attorney isn’t about taking control awa, it’s about ensuring their voice is still heard if they’re ever unable to make decisions themselves.

If it feels difficult, consider involving a trusted family member or professional for support during the conversation.

At New Age Care, we’re here to help guide families through these important discussions with care and understanding.

Celebrating Our Carer Champions!

Behind every good care visit is a person who takes the time to listen, help and make someone’s day a little easier.

This month, we’re celebrating Charlene, Seth and Abbie for the care they give and the difference they make to the people we support.

It’s the everyday things that matter - being there, lending a hand, having a chat and making sure someone feels comfortable in their own home.

We’re very grateful to have you as part of the New Age Care team. Thank you for everything you do. 💚
