Why 10 years? We want to understand why people wait so long.
The statistic that keeps us up at night: the average person in the UK waits 10 years from first noticing hearing difficulties to seeking help. Ten years of missed conversations. Ten years of turning up the TV. Ten years of nodding along in meetings, missing punchlines, asking people to repeat themselves. We want to understand why. And we think the answer will help us β€” and other audiologists β€” do better. That's the basis of the research study we've launched this week. We're looking for over-50s across Essex and Hertfordshire who haven't had a hearing test in five years. Half-price hearing assessment when you take part. Your answers stay anonymous. Your experience matters. To find out more or to register: πŸ“ž 01279 295972 πŸ“§ [email protected] Share this with someone over 50 who's been putting it off. That's exactly who we need to hear from. πŸ’›

Are you over 50 and haven't had a hearing test in 5 years? We need you. And we'll give you 50% off.

πŸ”¬ We're excited to continue with our research study we're conducting here at Your Hearing Clinic β€” and we're looking for participants from across north-west Essex and Hertfordshire.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
βœ… Aged 50 or over
βœ… Haven't had a hearing test in the last 5 years
βœ… Live or work within 15 miles of Stansted Mountfitchet

WHAT'S INVOLVED:
πŸ“‹ A short questionnaire about your hearing health, lifestyle and habits (takes around 10 minutes)
πŸ‘‚ A comprehensive hearing assessment with Jas at Your Hearing Clinic

YOUR BENEFIT:
πŸŽ‰ 50% off your hearing test when you take part in the study

WHY IT MATTERS: The average person waits 7-10 years before seeking help for hearing loss. We want to understand what's behind that delay β€” and what would make people more likely to act sooner. Your responses will genuinely help shape how we communicate about hearing health across the region.

Blocked ear? It might be wax. Or it might be an emergency. Here's how to tell β€” and why 72 hours matters.
⚠️ Please read this and share it. It could matter more than you think.

If you wake up one day and one of your ears feels blocked β€” muffled, full, or you've suddenly lost hearing in it β€” most people assume it's wax and wait (hope) it goes away. Sometimes it is wax. But sometimes it's something else entirely: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL). And the difference is critical.

SSHL is a medical emergency. It requires steroid treatment β€” and that treatment must begin within 72 hours of onset to have the best chance of reversing the damage. Leave it longer than that, and the hearing loss may become permanent.

The symptoms can look identical to a blocked ear from wax:
❌ Sudden muffled hearing in one ear
❌ A feeling of fullness or pressure
❌ Sometimes accompanied by tinnitus

πŸ‘‰ The only way to tell the difference is an audiological assessment. At Your Hearing Clinic we can see you this week β€” often within 24 hours. If we identify signs of SSHL we will immediately liaise with your GP and refer you urgently for medical treatment with ENT consultant. Do not wait. Do not hope it clears on its own.

"I can answer calls through my hearing aids while I'm gardening." YHC Patient
This is one of our favourite things to hear (pun very much intended). πŸ˜„

Modern hearing aids connect directly to your phone via Bluetooth. That means: πŸ“ž Phone calls come through your aids β€” both ears, hands-free
🎡 Your playlist streams directly β€” no earphones needed
πŸ“Ί TV audio can stream wirelessly to your ears
πŸ—ΊοΈ Navigation instructions spoken straight to you
πŸ“± An app on your phone adjusts volume, programme and treble/bass

One of our patients described it as "like having AirPods that also fix my hearing." That's not a bad way to put it. If you have a loved one who's been resistant to hearing aids because of the stigma or the image of what they used to be β€” please share this post. The conversation needs updating.

Your hearing aids can now stream music, answer calls and adapt in real time. Welcome to 2026.
We need to talk about how much hearing aids have changed.
πŸ€–πŸŽ΅ The latest generation of hearing aids aren't just amplifiers. They're miniature AI-powered computers β€” worn in or behind your ear β€” that:
🎡 Stream music directly from your iPhone or Android
πŸ“ž Take calls hands-free through your hearing aids
🧠 Use AI to distinguish speech from background noise in real time
🌍 Automatically adapt to different environments β€” restaurant, street, meeting room
πŸ“± Let you control everything from an app on your phone
πŸ”‹ Recharge overnight like your phone β€” no fiddly batteries
This is the technology we fit at Your Hearing Clinic.

Not NHS-contracted models from a limited list β€” every leading brand, matched to your hearing, your lifestyle and how you actually live your life. If you last tried hearing aids years ago and were disappointed, what you tried then and what exists now are barely comparable.

πŸ“ž 01279 295972 β€” ask us about a no-obligation technology demonstration.

"She found something my GP had missed for two years."
We share patient stories carefully and always with full consent. This one felt important to share. A patient came to us after years of "a feeling of pressure" in one ear β€” dismissed twice as sinuses, told to wait. After a full diagnostic assessment at Your Hearing Clinic, Jas identified middle ear dysfunction that had been affecting that patient's hearing and balance. She wrote to the patient's GP directly, provided a full audiological report, and the patient was seen by ENT within two weeks. "I just feel heard. For the first time in two years, someone actually found out what was wrong." This is what independent, specialist audiology is for. Not just fitting hearing aids. Investigating what is actually happening β€” with the equipment, the time and the clinical expertise to do it properly. If something doesn't feel right with your ears, don't wait. We're here. πŸ“ž 01279 295972 | [email protected]

What an independent private audiologist can detect that you might wait months for elsewhere
πŸ”¬ There's a significant difference between a standard hearing screen and a specialist audiological assessment. Here's what we do that NHS and chain clinic appointments often can't β€” within days, not months. At Your Hearing Clinic we use specialist-grade diagnostic equipment including: βœ… Diagnostic audiometry β€” testing hearing sensitivity across the full frequency range, not just speech βœ… Tympanometry β€” assessing middle ear pressure and Eustachian tube function βœ… Speech discrimination testing β€” how you process speech in noise, not just pure tones βœ… Otoscopy β€” high-magnification visual assessment of the ear canal and eardrum βœ… Acoustic reflex testing β€” checking the function of the tiny muscles that protect your hearing Any of these can reveal conditions that a basic screen would miss: middle ear dysfunction, early signs of acoustic neuroma, Eustachian tube problems, and more. And if we find something that needs medical attention, we liaise directly with your GP and refer to ENT β€” usually within days. The NHS waitlist for the same level of assessment: often 18 weeks or more. Our waitlist: usually same day/48hrs. πŸ“ž 01279 295972 β€” call us to discuss what a full assessment involves.

Flying this summer? Get your ears checked first β€” especially if they've felt blocked.
✈️ Most people think a blocked ear before a flight is just a minor inconvenience. It can be considerably more than that. Here's what happens when you fly with blocked ears or underlying ear issues: πŸ”» Cabin pressure changes rapidly during ascent and descent πŸ”» The Eustachian tube (which equalises pressure) struggles if it's already compromised by wax, fluid or inflammation πŸ”» The result: intense pain, temporary hearing loss, or in rare cases, barotrauma β€” a rupture or damage to the eardrum.

We recommend a full hearing and ear assessment before flying if: βœ… Your ears have felt blocked or muffled recently βœ… You've had a cold, sinus infection or upper respiratory illness in the last month βœ… You have hearing loss or wear hearing aids βœ… You've had ear surgery or perforated eardrums previously βœ… You fly frequently and notice your hearing is affected each time We're just 15 minutes from Stansted Airport β€” and we can usually see you within a day or so. πŸ“ž 01279 295972 | [email protected] Flying soon? Book a pre-flight ear assessment. It takes less than an hour and could save you a very uncomfortable journey.
