I will miss work when I'm off on maternity leave. I'm winding down, with reduced hours starting tomorrow.

Re-establishing rotation during gait (running/walking) is something I go through a lot with my patients in clinic.

There are loads of reasons why people forget how to rotate their trunk and pelvis during gait, and reminding their body of this movement pattern can feel very weird to them!

This image shows such a lovely counter-rotation up through the whole body, sharing forces beautifully and elastically. He makes it look easy, doesn't he? This is what good movers do.

You don't have to be an athlete to move with ease, we all can.

Lacking rotation can lead to all sorts of overload injuries and strains like low back pain, achilles and foot pain, hip pain..any pain really.

Rehabilitation of pain isn't just about strength and mobility. Its re-learning reflexive movement patterns with proprioception, coordination, awareness and timing, and by learning what movement is required for the task in hand.

I still can't fully believe its happening but being 7 months pregnant already I need to get ready!

I'm still working at the moment but have reduced my hours available in June, and then I'll start my maternity leave from the beginning of July for a few months, when my booking system will be switched off.

Three of my Pilates classes will be covered by the top lass that is (I can't say thank you enough, Kellie!) but clinic will be closed for a while.

Reframing Chronic Pain - What's Its Purpose?

This review was left by someone who I recently helped online using JEMS.

Since qualifying as a coach, I listen differently. I hear even more beliefs that come up when a patient talks through their history. Words like 'vulnerable', 'weak', 'damaged' appear, which for the most part isn't actually true when it comes to chronic pain.

Physical damage due to direct trauma normally heals up quite nicely, but the brain continues to perceive danger and wants to protect.

Unfortunately, the brain doesn't care if this protection continues to cause you pain.

Emotional trauma can also cause real physical pain.

I also hear 'I've just gotten used to it' or 'I just ignore it' which can be seen as a protective coping response; a blurring of the painful area in the minds-eye which affects proprioception, muscle timing and therefore effort required to use said area.

I might offer a body scan to note any words, images or sensations that pop up. Its incredible what people find. I ask them to ask their tensions or pain "what's its purpose?"
What often comes up is "its there to protect me" or "its holding me together".

I offer all sorts of tools to reframe these beliefs, and to make up their own too.

A JEMS session then, offers learnings to reframe, to re-pattern, and then perform simple movements with ease and with awareness.

The outcome being words like this found in my review. The above message is written using experience from many patients, no-one specific.

JEMS is a multi-systems approach to MSK rehabilitation, and uses a coaching style of listening and patient learning making it quite different to standard MSK rehabilitation methods.

Hands up who's questioned their abilities and self worth? 🙋‍♀️ I certainly have.

Imposter Syndrome affects up to 70-80% of the population and is most common in high achievers. It involves feelings of self-doubt, perfectionism and fear of failure. It can lead to anxiety, overworking and burnout.

We're offering you a free in-person 90 minute workshop in Killearn for you start to understand and tackle your self-doubt, in a safe and relaxed environment.

Often people take the time to email or text me after an appointment with me to say how much better they are feeling, which I love.

I received this one on Friday. I read it out to my husband and he said "its why you do it, isn't it"

He is right.

I've always known I love helping people, but what he said plus this email struck me differently.

I love that this patient felt heard, supported, gained symptomatic relief and understood through our movement explorations what they could do to help maintain a more pain free lower back.

I feel grateful that people put their trust in me in every session.

Its more than helping people, it's helping people who want to help themselves. This is one of the many reasons I have become a coach. It works so well with what I already do, but it opens up my scope of practice to help people who aren't in physical pain too.

To facilitate change wherever discomfort or disconnection is felt.
