Do I need to take another driving test before driving with adaptations?

If you already have a valid driving licence you will not need to pass your test again to drive with adaptations. However, you do need to make sure you are safe to drive and therefore assuming you are considering driving with adaptations due to a change in a medical condition, you should consult your doctor and potentially go for a driving assessment before using adaptations.

If you have never driven with an adaptation before, we do recommend taking driving lessons to ensure you are familiar with the adaptations and safe on the roads.

If you have never passed a driving test and you require adaptations to drive, we would recommend arranging a driving assessment. This will enable you to be confident in the adaptations required before starting to learn to drive. Assessment centres can often assist with the information required for gaining extra accommodations for driving tests too.

Some driving licences will have additional codes to advise on the required adaptations. You must ensure you have the correct adaptations for the codes on your licence for your licence to be valid. It is important to always ensure you are driving in accordance with your licence and any changes to your circumstances or your ability to drive must be reported to the DVLA.

Geely are one of the newest brands to arrive in the UK, launching towards the end of last year, and already having many dealerships throughout the country where their cars are available to view.

They currently have two models available: Starray and EX5.

We have now seen the first of these models, the Starray, to complete our push/pull brake/accelerator hand control design.

This adaptation is readily available for install on a Starray throughout our network of installation companies and it won’t be too long until we have a left foot accelerator and boot hoist available for this model too.

BYD have more than one car under the Sealion naming, one being the Sealion 5.

The Sealion 5 is a hybrid vehicle with the other already released, Sealion 7, being a full electric model. We will very possibly see more releases under this naming convention in the future too.

We have had a BYD Sealion 5 in our workshop for push/pull brake/accelerator hand control design and so this adaptation is now available if you are looking at getting this model.

If you’re considering the Sealion 7 instead then we hope it won’t be too long until we also have a design for that model. If you’re ordering one, please get in touch to discuss timescales and the design process.

Within a couple of weeks of each other last month we saw both the Tesla Model X (pictured) and the latest version of Tesla Model Y for left foot accelerator design and installation.

Both these models use the twin folding style of left foot accelerator.

We had already seen the original Model Y but since its facelift in 2025 we needed to complete a redesign for this product. This means until the next change on the vehicle we have a left foot accelerator available across all model years.

The Model X has ended right hand drive production so we do not expect to see any new ones of these but if you have an existing car then we now have the left foot accelerator available.

Nearly all of our adaptations can be installed onsite either at a dealership or home address as long as there is a safe working area. On occasion where a specific adaptation or vehicle requires workshop facilities, the vehicle will need to be taken to the installers premises.

Some installers may arrange collection and delivery or others may require you or the dealer to arrange for the vehicle to be taken to them. As there is much variation depending on circumstance and location, you should discuss this directly with your installer to determine the logistics and any costs involved.

If you are getting a new Motability vehicle the adaptations must be installed before handover so this will all be arranged between your installer and dealership.

The original pedal in a car determines whether we design a twin folding left foot accelerator or a floor mounted electronic left foot accelerator.

Kia currently use a mix of accelerator pedal styles across their range but the EV5 has the floor mounted style pedal so when we recently saw one for left foot accelerator design it was the electric left foot accelerator which was completed.

The Honda Jazz Crosstar is known as an SUV-styled version of the Jazz.

We have now designed a boot hoist for this car to load a mobility scooter. Due to the round shape of the opening, the width can be limiting for large scooters but with the seat off, small boot scooters are likely to be possible to be loaded.
