🍂🏡 September is here, and there’s definitely a cooler feel in the air!

As we start heading into autumn, now is the perfect time to make sure our homes — and the homes of older or vulnerable loved ones — are safe, warm and ready for the colder months ahead.

A few simple checks now can help prevent problems when winter arrives. If you have an older relative, friend or neighbour, why not pop in and help them with a quick Autumn Home Safety Check? 💚

1️⃣ Test the heating – Don’t wait until the first really cold day. Turn the heating on and check the boiler and radiators are working properly.

2️⃣ Prevent trips and falls – Clear away clutter, secure loose rugs and keep outdoor paths and steps free from wet leaves. As the evenings get darker, check that hallways, entrances and outdoor areas are well lit.

3️⃣ Check the radiators – Cold at the top but warm at the bottom? They may need bleeding. Getting them working efficiently now can help keep the home warmer when temperatures drop.

4️⃣ Test the alarms – Press the test button on smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. With heating being used more and windows staying closed, working alarms are essential.

5️⃣ Prepare for bad weather – Start adding a few essentials to the cupboard such as tins, long-life milk and favourite soups. It’s also a good idea to keep important and emergency telephone numbers somewhere visible, such as on the fridge.

💚 And don’t forget to check what support may be available. There may be local schemes that can help eligible residents make their homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.

Our wonderful Cream Home Care team is already helping clients prepare for the changing season. Sometimes it’s the little things — putting the heating on, clearing a pathway, picking up some shopping or simply checking that everything is okay — that make the biggest difference.

If you or someone you love could benefit from a helping hand to remain safe, warm and independent at home this autumn, we’re here to help.

💚 Lovely words from our clients and families 💚

Every two months, our Registered Care Manager picks up the phone and personally checks in with our clients and their families.

There’s no complicated questionnaire — it’s simply a chance to have a chat, find out how things are going, what’s working well and whether there’s anything we could do differently or better.

And sometimes, we receive comments that really make our day. 🥰

💬 “They are like family.”

💬 “It’s so nice to have my regular ladies back. People I know, and who know me, make such a difference.”

💬 “The staff always ask if there is anything else they can do, and I know they would do anything.”

💬 “It’s peace of mind for us as a family knowing M is being checked up on.”

For us, home care is about so much more than completing a list of tasks. It’s about relationships, familiar faces, trust, consistency and giving families peace of mind that someone they love is being cared for.

A huge thank you to our wonderful clients and families for taking the time to talk to us — and to our fantastic care team for continuing to make such a difference every day. 💚🏡

Sundowning can make late afternoons and evenings really tough for people living with dementia. As the day winds down, confusion or agitation can rise - sometimes because of something that happened earlier, sometimes because a need isn’t being met. Gentle reassurance, distraction, and familiar memories can help bring them back to a calmer place.

Here are 3 tips to help you navigate a loved one experiencing sundowning:

1. Sometimes what seems like ‘sundowning’ could be the person trying to communicate a need. This could be needing the toilet, feeling hungry or being in pain.

2. Uneven indoor lighting and reflective surfaces can sometimes cause confusion by creating disturbing shadows or mirrors. Close the curtains or blinds once it starts to get dark and cover the television with a dust cover, if it’s not being used.

3. If they seem unsettled, think about whether something earlier in the day may have affected them. Try calming them with distraction - like talking about a favourite memory. If they stay agitated, they may have an unmet need.

If you’re supporting someone through this, you’re doing an incredible job. 💙

🌦️ From Heatwaves to Flood Alerts & Thunderstorms… British weather certainly keeps us on our toes! ☀️⛈️🌧️

After the recent hot weather, we’re now facing the possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms and localised flooding over the coming days.

For our Cream Home Care team, changing weather can bring extra challenges when travelling between visits, but it can also increase risks for the people we support.

💚 A few important reminders:

* Check weather and travel updates before and during your shift.
* Never drive through flood water – turn around and find a safer route.
* Allow extra travelling time and let the office know if weather conditions are causing delays.
* Check that clients are safe, comfortable and have essentials such as food, drinks and medication.
* Be mindful of possible power cuts – particularly for vulnerable clients who rely on electrical equipment.
* Make sure clients have a working phone, torch and important contact numbers accessible where possible.
* Keep an eye out for changes around the home, including water ingress, leaks, slippery paths or other hazards.
* In a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 999.

And importantly, look after yourselves too. Wear suitable footwear, keep dry clothing available, stay hydrated and don’t take unnecessary risks when travelling.

Whatever the British weather throws at us, our priority remains the same: keeping our clients and our care team safe. 💚🏡

Stay safe • Stay prepared • Stay caring

💚 DON’T WAIT FOR A CRISIS – GET CARE IN EARLY 💚

Starting care doesn’t have to mean giving up your independence. In fact, getting a little support before you reach crisis point can help you stay independent, confident and comfortable in your own home for longer. 🏡

At Cream Home Care, we believe care should fit around you. Starting early gives you time to:

💚 Get used to having support in your own home, at your own pace
💚 Get to know and build trust with your regular care team
💚 Start with a small amount of support and increase it if your needs change
💚 Stay independent and continue doing the things that matter to you
💚 Give yourself and your family reassurance and peace of mind

Whether it’s help with personal care, medication, household tasks, companionship, shopping, appointments or simply having someone there for support, we can build a personalised care package around your individual needs.

There’s no need to wait until something happens.

Plan ahead. Stay in control. Start care on your terms. 💚

☀️ HEAT HEALTH ALERT ☀️

With temperatures set to rise over the coming days, we’re reminding all of our amazing care team to take extra care of yourselves while continuing to support our clients safely.

Many of the people we care for are more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather, so small actions can make a big difference.

💚 Remember to:
💧 Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water throughout the day.
🧊 Keep yourself and your clients cool where possible.
👕 Wear light, breathable clothing.
🌤️ Avoid the hottest part of the day where you can.
🥗 Eat light meals and snacks to keep your energy up.
🤝 Check in on one another – looking after ourselves helps us look after others.

When visiting clients:
✔️ Encourage regular drinks, even if they don’t feel thirsty.
✔️ Help keep rooms cool by closing curtains during the day and opening windows when safe in the evening.
✔️ Offer cool flannels or tepid washes if appropriate.
✔️ Encourage light clothing and lighter meals.
✔️ Be alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, including dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, flushed skin, unusual tiredness or collapse.
✔️ If you’re concerned about a client’s health, follow emergency procedures and seek urgent medical advice when required.

At Cream Home Care, the wellbeing of both our clients and our team is our priority. Thank you for everything you do each day to provide compassionate, safe care—even during challenging weather.

Please stay safe, stay cool, and continue looking out for one another. 💚
