End of year, about to be released for summer: some with anxiety, stress and pain. I am a mum to a 15 year old, a body worker and a teacher too - of all things musical. I'm acutely aware of the pressure on young people, and the privilege I have in them loaning me their trust and respect.

Teenagers have as much back pain as adults - but too often it's dismissed as 'growing pains', as normal. Girls are routinely put on the Pill for menstrual discomfort, when other solutions might be found. And digestive and urinary problems develop through the myriad of toileting rules some school have.

Sure, the time they spend slumped over laptops and their phones is a chronic add-on to the existing physical stresses in their lives - but slumping on uncomfortable chairs and stools (remember?) and the lack of physical exercise - and opportunity for it - at school, and then there are the injuries that come from the little time they do find for sport. And the anxiety, BOY OH BOY, the anxiety!! Too many straws on their developing backs.

They're just children. And their bodies take the hit but are less built for it. The physical and mental burdens get captured in their tissues, maybe a few historical traumas - even birth- thrown in there for good measure.

If you're lucky, as we are, to be in a school environment that listens and supports, that's great. If you're not, and you need a listening ear, I'm here as part of a team, to help ease the physical downsides of this crazy stage of development.

This week I've been hitting the books (though arrows are a bit dubious, at least Netter knew it moved! ). "I'll never stop learning" so said a 94 year old patient once! Fascia, embryology, cranial nerves and surgical procedures, all floats my boat! Once I understand the layers of history, trauma and anatomy.... we're away! The release is astounding.

Well, what a week I had last week.

Old scars and broken bones, babies and teenagers, proud parents, tired parents, old injuries... forgotten injuries.

I can't quite believe how many situations still come back to the principles I was taught at the European School of Osteopathy, and all those before me -
1. Find it, fix it, leave it alone [the body will do the rest]
2. The Rule of the Artery is Supreme [get the circulation going]
and, this week's favourite,
3. Structure: Function reciprocity - the body must move, breathe and all it's layers, slide.

And I rediscovered, that if you ask the body nicely, it will help! A real blessing. This philosophy in action, the Art of Osteopathy really belongs to no-one. And everyone.
