There are more than 100,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK every year, and fewer than one in 10 people survive (Resuscitation Council UK).

Would you know what to do if someone collapsed in front of you?

While visiting Parliament this week with MP Manuela Perteghella and Cllr Liz Coles, we had the pleasure of dropping in on a session about how important CPR and public access defibrillators are, and we got to speak with representatives from AEDdonate and Resuscitation Council UK. It was a powerful reminder that these are simple skills that really do save lives.

CPR and using a defib are easy to learn, and the more of us who know them, the better the chance for someone in their hour of need.

It's World First Aid Day, and the question worth asking is a simple one: if someone collapsed in front of you tomorrow, would you know what to do in those first few minutes?

Most people freeze. Not because they don't care, but because nobody ever showed them. That gap between wanting to help and knowing how to help is exactly what training closes.

VASA runs first aid courses across Warwickshire, from Emergency First Aid at Work to allergy and anaphylaxis awareness for schools. We're a local charity, so the money you spend on a course goes straight back into getting people to hospital appointments, to the shops, to see friends.

Yesterday we delivered Emergency First Aid at Work training to a brilliant team from Rugby Theatre.

When you teach first aid, you don’t usually expect to demonstrate it for real. But part way through the day we found ourselves helping an older lady who had fallen in the road, with cuts to her legs and arm and a nosebleed, treated there and then using the theatre’s first aid kit, with blankets to keep her warm while we waited for the ambulance.

It was a good reminder that first aid isn’t only about CPR. That’s an essential skill, but it’s the everyday accidents that are far more likely to be the ones we meet, and they can happen to any of us.

Well done to everyone who stepped in to help, and to the Rugby Theatre team who, despite the hour’s delay, still finished their training.

💙 On Tuesday, we were delighted to deliver a Benedict's Law allergy awareness session at Alveston CofE Primary School

With Benedict's Law now in effect, it's fantastic to see schools like Alveston taking a proactive approach and ensuring staff feel confident and prepared to support children with allergies safely.

As we begin a new school year, many schools are welcoming new staff and pupils. Taking the time to refresh knowledge, ask questions and discuss real-life scenarios helps create a safer environment for everyone.

Our 1-hour face-to-face Benedict's Law sessions complement the online training and give staff the opportunity to:

✅ Ask questions in a relaxed and supportive environment
✅ Talk through real-life scenarios and concerns
✅ Build confidence in recognising allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
✅ Understand staff responsibilities under Benedict's Law
✅ Access practical guidance and additional resources
✅ Discuss the specific needs of their school community

It was a hot, but great day!

34 degrees today. Officially the kind of heat that makes you want to lie very still in a darkened room.

But that didn’t stop the Community Partnership team from Warwickshire County Council, who spent the whole day with us completing their Emergency First Aid at Work training. Hot rooms, full concentration, and not a single complaint.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and got through the day. Skills like these matter, and they matter even more when you’re willing to learn them in conditions like today’s.
