Hydration for your muscles and joints
.
Hydration matters for more than just general health — it also plays a role in musculoskeletal health.
When you’re dehydrated, your muscles may feel more tired, cramp more easily, and recover less efficiently. Joint tissues also rely on good hydration to help them function well, and in hot weather we often lose more fluid than we realise.
A few simple tips:
- Sip water regularly throughout the day.
- Don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
- Increase fluids if you’re exercising or spending time outdoors.
- Include hydrating foods like fruit and vegetables.
.
If you’re feeling more achy, stiff, or fatigued in this heat, hydration could be one small but important piece of the puzzle. So please don’t forget your water bottle when the sun is out!

Did you know osteopathy can help with foot and ankle discomfort?
.
Spring is here, and many of us are swapping heavy winter boots for lighter shoes and longer walks. You might start to notice stiffness, unsteadiness in your feet or ankles, or tight calves as you become more active again.
.
Because your feet are the foundation of your body, discomfort here can affect the way you walk and move, and may contribute to strain elsewhere too, such as the knees, hips, back or even neck.
.
As osteopaths, we look at the feet in the context of the whole body, as well as how the rest of the body may be influencing the feet. Whether it’s a recent sprain or a longer-standing issue, treatment can help improve movement and ease discomfort.
.
Let’s get some spring back into your step!

Here is the final post in our 3‑part series answering some of the most common questions about osteopathy treatment. If you missed the previous posts, you can find them on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Today, we’re going to talk about:
.
3️⃣ Do I need regular osteopathy treatment?
You might wonder: “Should I still come if I’m not in pain today?”
Think of it like:
* A car MOT vs routine servicing.
* An MOT tells you if you pass or fail that day.
* Servicing looks after the small things so you’re less likely to break down later.
Osteopathy can work the same way.
* During a flare‑up, we focus on calming things down and helping you cope.
* Between flare‑ups, we can explore the underlying patterns — posture, jaw clenching, breathing, and how your body responds to stress or life changes.
For some people a maintenance plan is a great way to manage on going/lifestyle problems - this is always patient lead:
* For some a session every 4-12 weeks helps keep things improving.
* Alternatively, others might just check in at certain times of the year when symptoms usually creep back.
If you’d like to talk through what a realistic maintenance plan could look like for you, you’re always welcome to book an appointment with us at The White Practice.

Practice Update! – Saturday Appointments
We’re excited to share that Saturday appointments are now available at our practice!
.
Saturday sessions will be with Eriko, one of our osteopaths, to make it easier for anyone who finds it hard to visit during the week — whether you’re juggling work, family, or simply prefer a weekend appointment.
.
Eriko enjoys working with both acute and long‑standing pain, using gentle osteopathic techniques including cranial osteopathy. She’s passionate about supporting people through life’s transitions — whether they’re physical, emotional, or situational.
.
Osteopathy can support recovery from a wide range of physical and stress‑related symptoms, including neck and back pain, headaches, sciatica, and knee or foot problems.
If you’d like to learn more about what happens during an osteopathy appointment, take a look at our earlier post on this topic — you’ll find it on our Facebook or Instagram page!

This is the second post in our 3‑part series answering some of the most common questions about osteopathy treatment. If you missed the first post, you can find it on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Today, we look at:
.
2️⃣ Why do I need a follow‑up appointment?
* Although symptoms may improve after your first session, a follow‑up appointment is key to lasting improvement. Your body adapts gradually — especially with long‑standing issues — so one treatment rarely changes habits or patterns long term.
* The first session “starts to unlock” things; but follow‑ups help us build on that, as your body responds. Seeing you again soon, means we can adjust treatment, update exercises, and keep you on track rather than simply chasing symptoms that flare up again.
* We usually book your follow‑up about one to two weeks later — before tissue memory/habits reinstate your symptoms.
🕒 Follow‑up appointments last around 30 minutes.
Once symptoms settle, treatment sessions can be spaced further apart. Many people notice good improvement after 2–3 sessions, but depending on your condition, regular maintenance treatment can be helpful.
We’re going to talk about this in our final post next week!

Over the next few posts, we’ll go back to basics and answer some of the questions we’re most often asked about osteopathy treatment — from what happens during your first visit to why follow‑up sessions matter.
Let’s start with 👇
1️⃣ What happens during the first osteopathy appointment?
We usually:
* Start with a detailed chat about your symptoms, general health, work, hobbies, and goals.
* Assess how you move and use our hands to gently examine muscles, joints, and surrounding tissues.
* May ask you to remove outer layers of clothing so we can examine the area properly — always making sure you feel comfortable.
* Explain what we’ve found in clear language, and you’re welcome to ask questions at any point.
* Begin hands‑on treatment (if osteopathy is appropriate).
* Agree a simple plan: how many sessions are likely to help, any home advice, and when to seek further medical input if needed.
* Please note that you are free to bring a chaperone to your appointment if you so wish.
💡 Your first appointment lasts about 40 minutes.
Our aim is to understand you — not just your pain — and to create a realistic plan to help you move and feel better.
Next weeks post - 'Why do I need a follow up appointment?'

Staying active in the depth of winter
This is the time of year many of us struggle with motivation and energy. Shorter days and cold weather keep us indoors, and “exercise” can feel like the last thing we want to do.
The good news is that exercise does not have to mean hitting the gym. Very gentle daily movement – sometimes called zone-zero activity – can support your joints, mood and energy without feeling like a workout.
Zone-zero movement simply means ultra–low-intensity activity where you can breathe easily and hold a full conversation, such as:
* A slow walk
* Pottering around the house
* Light gardening
* Comfortable stretching
These small movements still count as physical activity and can build a foundation for feeling more like yourself by the time spring arrives.
We are here to help you stay mobile and active in this last home stretch of winter.
