Why do patients present the way they do?

For many osteopaths, this is where the most interesting clinical questions begin.

M3: Osteopathic Medicine – Integrating Structural, Mechanical and Visceral: A Systems Approach is designed to help practitioners look beyond individual symptoms and develop a deeper understanding of the relationships between the body's systems.

In this video, Course Director Jeremy Gilby shares an insight into the course and explains how a systems-based osteopathic approach can support clinical reasoning, osteopathic thinking and practical application.

Suitable for practitioners at all stages of their osteopathic journey, M3 encourages participants to move beyond identifying *what* is happening and explore *why* patients present as they do.

💚 Today is World Osteopathy Day 💚

Founded by Dr Andrew Taylor Still in 1874, osteopathy has grown into a profession practised and taught around the world, built on the principle that structure and function are closely related, and that the body has an inherent capacity to adapt, heal and self-regulate.

Osteopathy continues to evolve through research, education and clinical practice, while remaining rooted in the principles that shaped the profession from the very beginning.

At SCCO, we are proud to support the ongoing development of osteopaths through postgraduate education, practical learning and a shared commitment to professional growth.

Today, we celebrate the osteopathic profession, its practitioners, educators and students, and the positive impact osteopathy continues to have on patients around the world.

Happy World Osteopathy Day

We believe meaningful learning comes from more than knowledge alone.

Practical experience, discussion, reflection and hands-on guidance all play an important role in developing clinical understanding and confidence.

Our courses are designed around small tutor groups, providing opportunities for individual feedback, practical exploration and supportive learning throughout the educational journey.

We are committed to teaching the principles of osteopathy as founded by A.T. Still and developed by W.G. Sutherland, while continuing to explore these principles in light of modern understanding and evolving clinical practice.

Our approach encourages osteopaths to build strong foundations, deepen their practical skills and integrate osteopathic thinking into whole-body patient care.

Beyond the classroom, SCCO is also a community of like-minded osteopaths who learn from, support and inspire one another throughout their professional journeys.

Still, W.G.

Why do birth, development and the autonomic nervous system matter in paediatric osteopathy?

The experiences of pregnancy, birth and early development can have a lasting influence on how a child grows, moves and responds to the world around them.

As infants develop, the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in regulating many of the body's essential functions, including breathing, digestion, sleep, stress responses and adaptation to new experiences.

At the same time, rapid physical growth and neurological development are shaping movement patterns, coordination and overall function.

Understanding how these processes interact can help practitioners build a more complete picture of a child's development and the factors that may influence their health and wellbeing.

This is one reason why paediatric osteopathy continues to explore the relationship between structure, function and development throughout childhood.

At SCCO, our paediatric programmes provide opportunities to explore these important developmental relationships through postgraduate education, practical learning and clinical discussion.

How does a baby progress from their first movements to independent walking?

The answer lies in a remarkable relationship between growth, motor development and the evolving musculoskeletal system.

Paediatric Osteopathy: Growth, Motor Development and Structure explores how movement develops from birth through to 12 years of age, examining the close connection between brain development, physical growth and purposeful movement.

Across this three-day course, participants will explore:

✨ Musculoskeletal growth from infancy through childhood
✨ Motor development and purposeful movement
✨ Relationship between brain and physical structure
✨ The processes including disease that change growth in childhood
✨ Key developmental stages from 0-12 years of age
✨ Osteopathic perspective on paediatric growth, function and treatment

Designed for practitioners with an interest in paediatric osteopathy, this clinically relevant course also offers valuable insight into how childhood development shapes the musculoskeletal framework we see in adult patients today.

Every osteopath begins by learning anatomy, physiology and biomechanics. These foundations are essential, but developing palpatory skills requires something more.

Palpation is a practical skill that evolves through experience. The ability to recognise subtle changes in tissue quality, movement, tension and response is developed over time through observation, hands-on practice and guided learning. It is not simply about what you know, but how you apply that knowledge through touch.

As practitioners gain experience, they often discover that palpation becomes less about searching for a specific finding and more about developing the ability to perceive, assess and respond to what is presenting in front of them.

This process takes time, curiosity and ongoing refinement.

That is one reason why practical, hands-on education remains such an important part of osteopathic learning. Working alongside experienced tutors and peers provides opportunities to develop confidence, receive feedback and continue refining clinical skills throughout a professional career.

Learning does not stop at qualification.

For many osteopaths, it is a lifelong journey of developing perception, understanding and clinical application.

Understanding the principles of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field is one thing. Applying them confidently and effectively in clinical practice is another.

Application of the Cranial Approach to Osteopathy in Practice (Previously M2) is SCCO's flagship course, designed to help practitioners move beyond theory and develop a deeper understanding of how the cranial approach can inform diagnosis, treatment and patient care.

Through a combination of practical learning, discussion and tutor-led guidance, participants explore the five phenomena described by Dr W.G. Sutherland and learn how these concepts can be recognised, interpreted and applied within practice.

Topics include:

✨ The mobility of the cranial bones

✨ Reciprocal tension of the membranes

✨ Motility of the CNS

✨ Fluctuation of the CSF

✨ The involuntary motion of the sacrum between the ilia

✨ Balanced Membranous Tension (BMT)

✨ Fluid management techniques

With a tutor-to-student ratio of just 1:4, attendees benefit from individual support, practical feedback and a highly interactive learning environment.
