Garton Hardy Farming at Baston Hall

Garton Hardy Farming at Baston Hall Garton Hardy Farming is a regenerative farming business. We are passionate about only feeding grass, legumes and herbs from our permanent pastures.

Our agroecological approach to farming puts nature and biodiversity both above and below ground at the heart of our farming enterprise. Our herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle and small native breed sheep flock graze diverse pastures, herbal leys, and wildflower meadows, providing stock for pedigree breeding and 100% pasture fed meat for the discerning consumer. No grain finishing, or imported

soya is ever fed to our animals, meaning your beef, lamb, hogget and mutton is pure pasture fed, with high Omega 3 fatty acids, deep colour and incredible flavour.

It’s time to bring them home. I apologise if I cause any traffic holdups tomorrow between 11am and 12pm.
Will walk them from Mosewick Farm in Longley Green over Blackhouse Lane.
I will close an open garden gates I find, and string electric fencing over tempting garden entrances. Bear with me, it’ll only be for a short while, and we’ll remove them as we pass.

Rapidly approaching the end of our winter grazing at our ground down the road. Time to bring them home for some time in the shed. It’s come round rapidly, but they’ve had a great 2.5 months of fresh grazing, hay and fresh air.
The ground has had its first dose of bio stimulation from the cows, and will explode with life this summer, fabulous habitat for wildlife before being grazed again next winter. 9-12 months rest. Let Mother Nature work her magic.

Privileged to have had the opportunity to speak at the recent Oxford Real Farming Conference.
Stimulating discussion about out-wintering cattle with bale grazing systems.
Such a great event with plenty of challenging concepts and new approaches to help us address the issues of food, farming and climate.
I’ll be back.

Our Angus ladies and their calves are loving their vacation down the road at the neighbouring farm. Our four legged self propelled biostimulators are busy adding fertiliser and stimulating soil microbes with their saliva.
The hoof prints in the soft ground, create small pockets of water to slow surface run off, and disturb the seedbank to allow dormant seeds a chance to compete with the established grasses. As long as I move them every day to manage a balance of beneficial impact and avoid over poaching and damage, then the balance will tip heavily in my favour and they effect next year will be exciting to see. There will be the odd patch that goes too far but it’ll soon recover and will have a summer to grow, thrive and explode with life.
I hope anyone who walks the footpaths up there enjoys seeing them.
