For many young adults living with Type 1 diabetes, wearing a CGM or insulin pump can be life-changing — but research shows that it can also come with social and emotional challenges

Studies have found that some young people feel self-conscious about devices being visible, worry about what others might think, or dislike being asked questions about their diabetes. The need to constantly wear a device has been quoted as feeling intrusive and can affect how comfortable someone feels in social situations, with clothing, sport and everyday life.

Research in adolescents and young adults also highlights the importance of diabetes identity and stigma management. Feeling comfortable with diabetes as part of your identity is associated with better psychological wellbeing and quality of life.

Importantly, choosing not to use technology isn't about a lack of motivation or engagement. The experience of wearing the technology matters. Understanding these concerns can help healthcare professionals have more open conversations and support young people to choose technology that works for their lives.

💙 Diabetes technology should support life — not make someone feel defined by diabetes.

So...how do you wear your diabetes tech?

🐝 Did you know today is World Honey Bee Day?

It seems like a good day to answer a question I’m asked a lot: Is honey better than sugar?

🍯 Honey is a natural sugar made by bees from flower nectar. Because it is only lightly processed, it contains tiny amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

You may have heard that honey can help with things like heart health, digestion, immunity and memory. However, there isn’t strong evidence to support these health claims.

📉 Honey does however have a lower glycaemic index (GI) than table sugar — around 50 compared with 80. This is partly because honey contains more fructose, which is absorbed more slowly than glucose.

But does that mean honey is better for people with diabetes?

Not necessarily. Honey is still a source of sugar and carbohydrates, so it can still raise blood glucose levels.

Some honey products may also contain added sugars or syrups, so always check the label.

💡 If you have diabetes:

Choose pure honey, use it in moderation and include it as part of a balanced diet.

So, honey may be natural, but remember natural stuff still needs to be moderated sometimes!! 🍯🐝
