Your lumbar spine doesn’t just control your back.

It runs the show in your legs.

Each nerve root has a specific job:

L1 → Hip flexion / groin
L2 → Hip flexion / upper thigh
L3 → Knee extension / inner thigh
L4 → Ankle dorsiflexion / inner leg
L5 → Big-toe extension / outer leg & top of foot
S1 → Ankle plantarflexion / outer foot & sole

When a disc, bone spur, or stenosis pinches one of these roots, patients feel it as pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in that exact pattern — not “just back pain.”

This is why a detailed neuro exam matters more than an MRI alone. The MRI shows anatomy. The exam shows what the nerve is actually doing.

Save this. Next time your leg feels “off,” you’ll know which root to pay attention to.

May is Ehlers Danlos awareness month. A condition myself and my children struggle with...and so something I take a keen interest in within my clinic as well. This month I'll be giving little insights in EDS and how we as family manage our symptoms.

I'm sure many people know the discomfort a herniated disc can cause, I certainly do!

🚨This is what a real herniated disc looks like.

See that? The disc material is bulging out and pushing directly into the spinal canal, crushing the nerves and spinal cord.

➡️ Here’s what’s actually happening:

Your intervertebral discs are supposed to be shock absorbers between your vertebrae.But when the tough outer layer weakens or tears, the soft inner gel squirts out — creating a herniation.

➡️ Once it herniates:

• It invades the spinal canal
• Compresses nerve roots or the spinal cord
• Disrupts normal nerve signals

This isn’t “just back pain.”

It’s mechanical compression of your nervous system.

➡️ As it progresses, you can get:

→ Shooting pain down your arms or legs
→ Numbness or tingling
→ Muscle weakness
→ Loss of normal function

➡️ Bottom line:

A herniated disc is a structural problem that directly affects neurologic function.
