Another great project with flip the streets ❤👊🏼
Mumbles Skatepark has had a colourful makeover designed by the very community that uses it 🎨
🛹 Around 40 skatepark users, their friends and family, local PCSOs and volunteers from Mumbles Community Council have come together to create two brand new murals at Mumbles Skatepark, as part of a project promoting inclusion and belonging.
🎨 The project was run by Flip the Streets - a community initiative founded by Swansea University's Professor Lella Nouri, which works with young people to create collaborative artworks representing their beliefs and values in the places they use. It's previously transformed spaces in Clase, Gorseinon, Manselton and the city centre, replacing hateful graffiti with positive, colourful art.
🌊 At two workshops, skatepark users were asked what it meant to them to belong to the Mumbles skate community - and their ideas were turned into two murals by Fresh Creative CIC, one featuring a submarine inspired by sea-themed suggestions, and the other depicting a Mumbles spray can suggested by one of the users.
💬 Professor Lella Nouri said: "The energy on the mural day was fantastic, with skaters, families, volunteers and PCSOs all contributing to something positive, colourful and lasting. These murals reflect the creativity, pride and sense of belonging that already exists in the skatepark community."
🖼️ The team is now looking forward to hosting a special art exhibition celebrating previous Flip the Streets projects, to be held at the Volcano Theatre on High Street, Swansea, between 17th and 24th July.
