💊 WE'RE HIRING! | SCURLAGE PHARMACY

We're looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and reliable Full-Time Pharmacy Assistant to join our team at Scurlage Pharmacy!

The role will involve supporting our dispensary team, helping patients and customers, and assisting with the day-to-day running of our busy community pharmacy.

We're looking for someone who:

- Has excellent communication and customer service skills
- Is organised, dependable and works well as part of a team
- Has a positive attitude and a willingness to learn
- Ideally has previous pharmacy experience and a recognised Dispensary Assistant qualification (desirable, but not essential)

📍 Location: Scurlage Pharmacy
⏰ Position: Full-time

Over 60? There's another winter virus worth knowing about… 👀

We hear plenty about flu and COVID, but what about RSV?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that, for most people, causes symptoms similar to a cold.

However, in older adults and those with certain underlying health conditions, RSV can lead to more serious complications, including pneumonia and hospitalisation.

💚 The good news? There are ways to help protect yourself.

Vaccination can help reduce the risk of serious RSV illness, and some people are eligible to receive it free on the NHS in Wales.

💊✨ A little piece of pharmacy history…

We made a lovely little discovery in our Scurlage pharmacy recently!

Tucked away were these old medicine containers, including a tiny glass bottle labelled W. S. Francis M.P.S. – Chemist, Penclawdd.

A little reminder of Penclawdd's pharmacy history, long before the Mr Rees & family took over in 1983. It's interesting to think how many generations of local families have been through the doors of the village chemist over the years.

And just look at that old Senokot tin and the handwritten label on the bottle!

Now we're curious… does anyone remember W. S. Francis?

We'd love to hear any stories, memories or snippets of history you might have.

It's lovely to uncover a little bit of the pharmacy's past while continuing its story today. ❤️

Over 50? This is worth knowing. 👀

Most of us know shingles can cause a painful rash and long-lasting nerve pain, but emerging research around shingles vaccination has found something particularly interesting.

A major study found vaccination was associated with a 20% lower relative risk of being diagnosed with dementia over the following 7 years. 🧠

It’s important to be clear: shingles vaccination is not licensed to prevent or treat dementia, and further research is needed to understand the relationship.

What we do know is that vaccination helps protect against shingles and its complications.

💚 Shingles vaccination is available free on the NHS for eligible people in Wales.

Not currently eligible? You can still speak to our pharmacy team about shingles, your individual risk and the vaccination options available to you.

💉 NHS FLU VACCINATIONS START THIS THURSDAY!

Our NHS flu vaccination service starts at Penclawdd Pharmacy from Thursday 1st October.

📅 Bookings available
🚶 Walk-ins welcome

You may be eligible for a FREE NHS flu vaccination if you:

• Are aged 65 or over (including if you’ll turn 65 by 31 March 2027)
• Are aged 18–64 with certain long-term health conditions
• Are pregnant
• Live in a care home
• Are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive Carer’s Allowance
• Live with someone who has a weakened immune system
• Are experiencing homelessness or staying in a homeless hostel or night shelter

Not sure if you’re eligible? Just ask a member of our pharmacy team, we’ll be happy to check for you.

Bank Holiday reminder 📢

Just a reminder that our Penclawdd and Scurlage pharmacies will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday.

If you’re due to collect a prescription or need anything from us, please make sure you pop in before the weekend.

Our Penclawdd shelves have had a beautiful little update with these gorgeous local cards by Felicity Lloyd, Felicity Lloyd Bespoke Art - they felt rather perfect alongside our skincare.

Pharmacist-led skincare, developed here in Gower, surrounded by a little inspiration from the place behind the name. 🌊
