The science behind why extreme heat is so hard for amputees…
It’s not just that we “struggle” with it, there are many physiological reasons behind it, which is reassuring to know!
This also doesn’t cover the knock on effects of trying to function in extreme heat - the rubbing, sore skin, blisters etc.
& my phantom pains have kicked off big time this week too 😵💫
Anyway, here’s the science in case anyone is interested…
🌡️ Why Amputees Overheat More 🌡️
The science everyone should know…
🔥 1. Less Skin = Less Cooling
• Humans cool through their skin.
• Above‑knee amputation removes up to 20% of total skin surface, reducing the body’s natural “radiator.”
🥵 Result:The body must work harder to cool itself → more sweating, faster overheating
🦵 2. Walking Takes More Energy
• Above‑knee amputees use 60–100% more energy to walk.
• More energy → more heat produced → more sweat needed to cool down.
🦿 3. Prosthetic Sockets Trap Heat
Sockets act like sealed plastic shells:
• No airflow
• Sweat can’t evaporate
• Heat builds rapidly
• Humidity rises
• Skin becomes slippery → friction → more sweating
🫠 Evaporation is the body’s #1 cooling method — and the socket blocks it.
❤️🔥 4. Altered Blood Flow
After amputation:
• Blood vessels are cut
• Circulation patterns change
• Residual limbs often have reduced heat transfer
🥵 Heat gets trapped, and the body compensates by sweating more elsewhere.
🧠 5. Nervous System Changes
Sweating is controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
After amputation:
• Sweat gland distribution changes
• The brain may still “think” the limb is there
• Sweating increases in other areas to compensate
🏋️ 6. Muscle Compensation = More Heat
Above‑knee amputees rely heavily on:
• Core
• Glutes
• Hip flexors
🥵 These large muscles generate significant heat, even during light activity.
💧 7. Faster Dehydration
• More sweat + less effective cooling = quicker fluid loss.
• Dehydration then reduces sweating ability → overheating accelerates.

• Amputees don’t “struggle with heat” —
their bodies are working harder, with fewer tools, in a hotter environment.
