🍂👣 WHAT DOES SEPTEMBER BRING FOR YOUR FEET? 👣🍂

September means the end of summer sandals, back-to-school routines and the start of wearing closed-in shoes again… which can mean a few changes for our feet!

👟 Back into shoes
After months of sandals and bare feet, your feet may need time to adjust to wearing closed shoes again.

🦶 Hard skin & calluses
Summer can leave feet dry, cracked and with extra hard skin — especially around the heels.

💅 Toenails need some TLC
Regular trimming and filing can help keep toenails comfortable and prevent problems as we move back into everyday footwear.

🌧️ More moisture
Closed shoes and socks can create a warm, damp environment, so it’s important to keep feet clean and dry.

🔍 Check your feet
September is a great time to have a good look at your feet and deal with any niggles before they become bigger problems.

✨ Give your feet an autumn reset! ✨

At Lauren’s Footcare Clinic, I bring professional foot care directly to your home, helping you keep your feet comfortable, healthy and looking their best.

👣 Why Do Toenails Become Thickened? 👣

Thickened toenails are one of the most common problems I see during routine foot care appointments—but they’re not always caused by the same thing.

Some of the most common causes include:

👟 Repeated pressure or trauma
Tight-fitting shoes, running, or accidentally dropping something on your toe can damage the nail over time.

🦠 Fungal nail infections
A fungal infection can cause nails to become thicker, discoloured, brittle, and more difficult to cut.

🩺 Medical conditions
Certain conditions, such as psoriasis or poor circulation, can affect the way your nails grow.

📅 Ageing
As we get older, our nails naturally tend to grow more slowly and may become thicker.

✂️ Lack of regular nail care
If nails aren’t trimmed regularly, they can become overgrown, thickened, and uncomfortable.

Why is it important to treat thickened nails?

✔️ They can become painful when wearing shoes.
✔️ They can put pressure on neighbouring toes.
✔️ They’re much harder to cut safely at home.
✔️ They can increase the risk of ingrown toenails and infection.

The good news is that thickened nails can often be safely reduced and managed during a routine foot care appointment, helping to keep your feet comfortable and healthy.

💜 If you’re struggling to cut your nails or they’re becoming uncomfortable, don’t leave them until they’re painful—professional foot care can make a real difference.

🦶🎗️ Foot Health Is About More Than Just Nails and Hard Skin 🎗️🦶

When people think about foot care, they often think of nail cutting or removing hard skin. But every appointment also gives me the opportunity to assess the health of your feet and nails.

As a Foot Health Practitioner, I am always looking out for anything that doesn’t look quite right.

This includes changes such as:

🔍 Unusual moles or dark pigmentation.
🔍 Sores or ulcers that don’t heal.
🔍 New lumps or persistent swellings.
🔍 Changes to the skin that don’t improve.
🔍 Dark streaks or unusual discolouration in the toenails.
🔍 Lesions that look different from common corns or verrucas.

While many changes are harmless, some can be signs of skin or nail cancers, so they should never be ignored.

Over the years, I have identified suspicious changes during routine appointments and advised clients to seek further assessment through their GP or the appropriate healthcare service. In some cases, these referrals have led to early diagnosis and treatment.

💜 I don’t diagnose cancer, but I know what warning signs to look for and when something needs further investigation.

Sometimes, a routine foot care appointment is about much more than keeping your feet comfortable—it could help identify a problem early, when treatment is often most effective.

If you notice a new or changing mark on your feet or nails, don’t ignore it. It’s always worth getting it checked.

👣 Looking after your feet means looking after your overall health.

👣 Frequently Asked Question 👣

“Does foot care treatment hurt?”

This is one of the questions I’m asked most often!

The answer is… Routine foot care should not be painful.

Most clients tell me that their treatment is comfortable and that their feet feel much lighter and more comfortable afterwards.

If you have a particularly tender corn, an ingrown toenail, or another painful problem, I will always work as gently as possible and explain everything as I go. Your comfort is my priority.

Many clients even find their appointments relaxing! 💜
