“320 miles?? For a sandwich??” (yes, apparently ours)

“Are YOU Debbie?” to a very confused customer who was not Debbie

One Facebook post. Hundred new page followers, hundreds of comments and likes, a real hype.
A lovely lady from Durham who’s now more famous in Taunton than we are. ❤️🥹

All we did was make sandwiches. We’ll keep doing exactly that.

“You’ll always be worth a detour.” ❤️

A year ago, two lovely people from Durham walked in, bought two sandwiches for a long journey home, and left. That should have been the whole story. It’s how it goes a hundred times a day, in every food shop, everywhere.

But they wrote to us that night. And then they didn’t stop.

Through our first autumn, when some days we stood behind the counter wondering if anyone would come.

Through the winter, when we questioned everything.

Debbie and Ian were 340 miles away, and somehow they kept believing in us ,messaging, reviewing, trying to recreate our Spanish sandwich in their own kitchen, telling us to keep going on the days we weren’t sure we could.

They never saw the early mornings.
They never saw the hard weeks.
But somehow, they always seemed to write at exactly the right time.

This January, they told us they’d booked a night in Taunton -not passing through, booked - around a promise made a year earlier: that one day they’d come back for that sandwich.

On Wednesday, they kept it.

We finally met the people who had been holding us up from 340 miles away.

Ian says it was the best scotch egg of his life. Debbie says the wait was worth it.

But here’s what we couldn’t quite say at the counter:

You didn’t just come back for a sandwich.
You reminded us that this little shop matters to someone.

That what we make with our hands in the mornings travels further than we ever imagined - into other people’s kitchens, their holiday plans, their year.

Every small business has quiet days when the dream feels heavy.

If you’re lucky, you get a Debbie and an Ian.

We got ours.

See you next summer, friends.

Dear Meal Deal,

It’s not you. It’s… no, actually, it is you.

It’s the way your bread is somehow both dry AND wet. The single sad slice of cucumber you call “salad.” The way you’ve been sitting in that fridge since dawn, plotting against my afternoon.

I’ve met someone. They hand-stack pastrami like it’s an art form. Their pickles crunch. Their bread comes from an actual bakery. They make my lunch while I watch, like some kind of beautiful delicious theatre.

Don’t call me.
